Panthers excel during preliminaries of state swimming, diving meet

 Impressive performances during preliminaries sent all four Park Rapids qualifiers to the finals of the state Class A boys swimming and diving meet.

Senior Spencer Fritze kicked off the state meet by advancing to the finals with a runner-up score of 272.85 points in diving during preliminaries at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Feb. 28. Sauk Rapids/Rice's Elijah Grabinski had the top score of 276.15 points after the first eight dives. Senior Seth Breitweser finished 20th with 156.80 points to miss out on advancing to the final three dives.

The Panthers broke three school records while qualifying for the finals in all four events during the swimming preliminaries on March 1. 

The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Marcus Benson, Spencer Fritze, senior Zach Fritze and Breitweser advanced to the consolation finals after placing 10th with a time of 1:40.64. Benson opened with a 24.48 in the backstroke, Spencer Fritze had a 27.34 split in the breaststroke, Zach Fritze clocked a 24.98 in the butterfly and Breitweser anchored with a 23.84 split in the freestyle. Park Rapids entered with a seed time of 1:42.09 for the No. 14 seed out of 21 qualifiers. Breck/Blake set a Class A record with a winning time of 1:32.43.

Benson qualified for the finals in the 200-yard individual medley by breaking his school record with a 1:58.81 for sixth place. Benson went 25.95 in the butterfly, 28.76 in the backstroke, 36.52 in the breaststroke and 27.58 in the freestyle. Benson set the school record with a 2:03.57 at the Section 5A meet to earn the No. 13 seed out of 26 competitors. Minnehaha Academy's Andrew Karpenko broke the Class A record with a winniing time of 1:49.02.

Spencer Fritze set a school record with a 22.04 for 10th place in the 50-yard freestyle. That broke Jonah Winter's school record of 22.07 set in 2003. Fritze entered state as the No. 14 seed out of 19 qualifiers with a 22.48. Anderson Breazeale of Breck/Blake had the top preliminary time of 20.96.

Benson capped off preliminaries by breaking his school record and placing third in the 100-yard backstroke. Benson clocked splits of 25.47 and 26.79 for a 52.26 to top his school record of 53.50 set at the section meet. Benson was the No. 4 seed out of 24 swimmers with a 53.85. Breazeale also broke the state Class A record in that event with a 48.57.

The state finals will begin at noon on March 2.
