Panthers drop section games to Patriots, Rams

Despite missing 17 free throws, Pequot Lakes was able to hold off the Park Rapids girls basketball team for a 50-47 Mid-State Conference victory Thursday night at the Century School gym.

     Despite missing 17 free throws, Pequot Lakes was able to hold off the Park Rapids girls basketball team for a 50-47 Mid-State Conference victory Thursday night at the Century School gym.

     Haley Wiebolt scored 16 points and Caitie Ryan added 12 points for the Patriots, who went 9 for 26 on free throws in their conference debut. Pequot Lakes improved to 2-0 against Section 8AA teams and 4-1 overall.

     Katie Klein scored 11 points while Gabie Johnson (10) and Hope Johnson (9) combined for 19 points for the Panthers, who trailed 34-22 at the half. Megan Grimes pulled down nine rebounds while Klein led the team with five assists and four steals as the Panthers fell to 1-1 in the conference.

Strong second half keys Rams’ win

     Roseau went on a 42-18 run in the second half to spark an 82-69 win over the Panthers Saturday night at the Area High School gym.

     A layup by Gabie Johnson, two inside baskets by Grimes, two baskets by Klein and a basket off a rebound by Bria Wolff gave the Panthers a 14-4 lead with 13:27 to play in the first half.

     Four baskets by Kiley Borowicz and three layups and a 3-pointer by Kacie Borowicz sparked a 27-13 run as Roseau claimed a 31-27 lead at the 2:40 mark. Inside baskets by Gabie Johnson and Grimes and a layup by Klein gave Park Rapids a 36-33 edge at the half.

     Two layups by Gabie Johnson and a three-point play by Grimes gave the Panthers a 43-36 lead with 15:38 to play before the Rams rallied. Six baskets by Kiley Borowicz and five layups and a 3-pointer by Kacie Borowicz gave Roseau a 78-61 advantage with 2:31 remaining.

     Wolff had three inside baskets, Gabie Johnson scored off a pair of rebounds and Klein hit a 3-pointer for the Panthers during that stretch. Grimes scored off a rebound, Macky Warne hit a 3-pointer and Klein scored inside for Park Rapids down the stretch.

     Kacie Borowicz scored a game-high 31 points and Kiley Borowicz added 27 points to lead the Rams, who improved to 2-0 against section foes and 4-0 overall.

     Gabie Johnson had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Grimes had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds along with four assists. Klein added 16 points, four assists and three steals while Warne had three steals as the Panthers fell to 1-2 against section teams and 1-2 overall.
