Panthers drop pair of Mid-State matches

Staples-Motley prevailed in three sets and Crosby-Ironton survived in five sets in conference play against the Park Rapids volleyball team.

Tabetha Allen, Klaire Storry and Morgan Becker combined for 31 kills in leading Staples-Motley to a 3-0 Mid-State Conference victory over the Park Rapids volleyball team at the Area High School gym on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Allen had a double-double with 14 kills and 10 digs while Storry had nine kills and Becker had eight kills to spark the Cardinals’ 25-11, 25-21, 25-22 victory.

Riley Pike opened Set 1 with a kill before Staples-Motley went on a 13-3 run. Marriyam Ejaz and Kate Aukes had kills as Park Rapids trailed 17-8 before the Cardinals closed out the set with an 8-3 run.

A kill and a tip by Katie Burlingame and kills by Aukes and Pike tied Set 2 at 4-4. After Staples-Motley went on a 5-0 run, kills by Aukes, Ejaz, Kendra Scholz, Burlingame and Quinn Hunter kept Park Rapids within 16-12. Kills by Ejaz and Aukes made it 17-16 before kills by Scholz and Aukes cut the gap to 22-21. Staples-Motley won the next three points to end that set.

Ejaz served an ace and had a winning tip while Scholz, Hunter and Aukes had kills as the Panthers held an 11-10 lead to start Set 3. Staples-Motley put together a 15-11 run to end the match.

Scholz (9) and Burlingame (8) combined for 17 kills while Abby Kirlin, Keely Peterson and Burlingame had eight digs apiece as the Panthers fell to 0-3 in conference matches and 0-4 overall. Ejaz (18) and Pike (13) combined for 31 set assists.

The win gave Staples-Motley a 2-0 record in conference matches to tie Pequot Lakes atop the Mid-State standings. Detroit Lakes and Aitkin are 1-1 while Crosby-Ironton sits at 1-2.

C-I wins marathon

Jacey Rydberg, Josie Schaefer and Kallie Papenfuss had double digits in kills in helping Crosby-Ironton survive a marathon 3-2 conference win over the Panthers at Crosby on Oct. 13.

Rydberg’s 13 kills and four ace serves, Schaefer’s 12 kills, and Papenfuss’ 11 kills and three ace serves led the Rangers to a 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13 victory. Mya Decent added eight kills and three ace serves as C-I had 54 kills and 14 ace serves in the match.

Pike, Aukes and Burlingame had 11 kills apiece for the Panthers. Scholz, Peterson and Burlingame served two aces each while Peterson served 11 points. Defensively, Peterson (18), Burlingame (18) and Aukes (10) had double digits in digs.

Burlingame’s 10 service points and nine kills led the Panthers in a 3-0 loss to East Grand Forks on Oct. 10.

Scholz had seven kills and Ejaz had 24 set assists in EGF’s 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 victory at the Area High School gym. Peterson, Aukes and Burlingame had eight digs each and Ejaz added seven digs for Park Rapids.
