Panthers drop pair of games

Fargo North/South scored five power-play goals and handed the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team its first shutout of the season in an 8-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Fargo North/South scored five power-play goals and handed the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team its first shutout of the season in an 8-0 victory Saturday afternoon at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

Avery Myers recorded a hat trick as Fargo outshot the Panthers 54-16. Park Rapids was whistled for 11 penalties and Fargo capitalized by going 5 for 11 on the power play.

Graysen Myers' power-play goal gave Fargo a 1-0 lead in the first period before a power-play goal by Hannah Dorsey and goals by Avery Myers and Katelyn Arman made it 4-0 after the second period. Avery Myers opened the third period with a pair of goals, including one on the power play, before power-play goals by Mackenzie Hanson and Dorsey concluded the scoring.

Goalie Julia Smith made 37 saves over the first two periods while Klohie Mankie made nine saves in the third period for the Panthers.

Fargo, which has the best record in North Dakota, improved to 13-4 while the Panthers fell to 8-11-1.

Lightning edge Panthers

Northern Lakes used a 42-25 advantage in shots on goal to spark a 5-3 Mid-State Conference win over the Panthers Thursday night at Walker.

Alyssa Kosloski and Sydney Tietz scored to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead after the first period.

After Brooke Jerger set up a goal by Taylor Pingrey at the 2:25 mark of the second period to cut the deficit in half, goals by Alexa Holm and Sam Gutzman gave Northern Lakes a 4-1 advantage.

Lexi Hinkley-Smith opened the third period with a goal on an assist from Alexa Kennedy at the 3:13 mark before Tietz scored 32 seconds later to seal the win. Hinkley-Smith set up Tara Johanning for the game's final goal at the 8:11 mark.

Smith made 37 saves for the Panthers, who fell to 1-3-1 in the conference. Northern Lakes improved to 4-0 in the conference and 14-5 overall by winning for the eighth game in a row.
