Panthers dominate play in win over Bagley/Fosston

Five different players scored goals as the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team dominated play in a 5-1 Section 8A victory over Bagley/Fosston Tuesday night at Walker.

Park Rapids finished with a 57-18 advantage in shots on goal to reach the .500 mark in section play with a 5-5 record.

The Panthers scored three times on 15 shots in the opening period. Mitch Peterson opened the scoring at the 4:16 mark of the first period on an assist from Brett Pinoniemi. Carter Opheim scored at the 7:33 mark as Cameron Hoyt received an assist. Jarrett Johnson set up a goal by Bjorn Jorgenson at the 10:00 mark for a 3-0 lead.

Bagley/Fosston was outshot 22-5 in the second period, but cut the gap to 3-1 as Joshua Dukek scored at the 15:52 mark.

Cole Hoscheid's power-play goal at the 12:31 mark and Hoyt's goal at the 13:19 mark of the third period concluded the scoring. Jorgenson assisted on Hoscheid's goal while Pinoniemi set up Hoyt's goal.

Goalie Austin Jerger made 17 saves as the Panthers improved to 5-11-1 overall.

Bagley/Fosston fell to 1-6 in section games and 2-11-1 overall.

East Grand Forks, which is rated No. 5 in this week's state Class A poll, is 5-0 in the section and 8-4-1 overall. Thief River Falls, the No. 22-rated team, is 4-0 in the section and 7-7 overall while Northern Lakes is also undefeated in section play at 3-0 while posting an 11-1-1 overall record. Lake of the Woods is 6-1 in the section and 9-4-1 overall while Warroad (which is rated No. 24 in the state) is 2-2 in section games and 5-9-1 overall. Rounding out the section teams are Detroit Lakes (1-2 in the section and 5-5-1 overall), Crookston (2-4 in the section and 4-12 overall), Red Lake Falls (2-4-1 in the section and 5-7-1 overall) and Kittson Central (0-7-1 in the section and 0-12-1 overall).
