Panthers dominate Perham, pick up first victory of season

A dominating performance in the pool Thursday night propelled the Park Rapids boys swimming and diving team to its first dual-meet victory of the season.

A dominating performance in the pool Thursday night propelled the Park Rapids boys swimming and diving team to its first dual-meet victory of the season.

The Panthers won the first 11 events, including a 1-2-3 sweep in three of them, in coasting to a 119-51 victory over Perham/New York Mills at the Area High School pool on Jan. 10.

Jordan Odor, Seth Breitweser, Elliott Nichols and Spencer Fritze opened the meet with a winning time of 1:57.32 in the 200-yard medley relay before Marcus Benson won the 200 freestyle in 1:55.89 and Isaac Zinniel followed in 2:30.89. A 1-2-3 showing by Breitweser (in 2:30.20), Cameron Runyan (in 2:47.97) and Dominik Backmann (in 3:00.38) in the 200 individual medley gave the Panthers a 35-8 advantage.

After Zach Fritze won the 50 freestyle in 24.53, the Panthers went 1-2-3 in diving behind Spencer Fritze's 247.10 points, Breitweser's 228.30 points and Runyan's 154.35 points. Zach Fritze clocked a winning time of 1:03.48 in the 100 butterfly as Park Rapids extended its lead to 64-21.

A 1-2 finish by Benson (in 53.15) and Nichols (in 59.55) in the 100 freestyle was followed by a 1-2 showing by Odor (in 6:06.56) and Jake Zinniel (in 6:35.92) in the 500 freestyle as the Panthers led 85-31.

Zach Fritze, Breitweser, Odor and Benson won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.54 before Nichols (in 1:12.80), Isaac Zinniel (in 1:16.16) and Matt Lichter (in 1:33.51) posted a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 backstroke.

Spencer Fritze won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.00 for a 119-45 lead before the Panthers swam exhibition in the 400 freestyle relay. Benson, Zach Fritze, Nichols and Spencer Fritze would have won that last event with a 3:53.25.

The win lifted the Panthers' record to 1-3 in dual meets this season.
