Panthers dominate, claim tourney title

     Three dominating efforts led the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team to the championship at last Saturday’s Park Rapids Invitational.

     The Panthers capitalized on 13 errors and turned 38 hits and 20 walks into 41 runs in victories over Nevis (17-0 in five innings), Pine River-Backus (10-2) and Norman County West (14-3 in five innings). Park Rapids’ pitchers allowed only nine hits and four earned runs in the three tournament games.

     In the other games in pool play, PR-B defeated Nevis 17-11, NCW defeated Sebeka 14-10, NCW defeated Bagley 20-4 and Sebeka defeated Bagley 16-4. PR-B defeated Sebeka 4-0 for third place.

 

Panthers rout Tigers

     A 20-hit attack powered the Panthers past Nevis.

     An RBI single by Charity Ridlon, a two-run double by Lauren Naeve and an RBI single by Hope Johnson  sparked a four-run second inning.

     A triple by Sarena Kinkel was followed by singles by Brooke Jerger, Mackenzie Warne, Johnson and Tara Johanning and a two-run double by Ridlon as the Panthers extended their lead to 11-0 in the third.

     A single by Brooke Jerger, an RBI single by Bailee Jerger, an RBI double by Morgan Dean, and singles by Johanning and Christina Smith led to four more runs in the fourth.

     A double by Bailee Jerger and singles by Shania Johnson and Hope Johnson plated the final two runs in the fifth.

     Naeve went 2 for 3 with three RBI, Hope Johnson went 3 for 4, Shania Johnson went 2 for 4, Dean went 2 for 4 with three RBI, Johanning went 2 for 4, Ridlon went 2 for 3 with three RBI, Kinkel went 2 for 4, and Brooke Jerger went 3 for 3 with four runs scored to lead the Panthers’ offense.

     Bailee Jerger and Dean combined on a one-hitter with Allyson Booker’s lead-off single in the first providing the only hit for Nevis.

Panthers defeat PR-B

     The Panthers took advantage of eight walks and five errors to defeat Pine River-Backus.

     Three walks, two errors, a passed ball and Johanning’s sacrifice fly gave the Panthers a 3-1 lead in the second.

     A single by Brooke Jerger, an RBI double by Bailee Jerger and a run-scoring grounder by Naeve pushed the lead to 5-1 in the third.

     Naeve’s RBI single in the fifth made it 6-1 before singles by Brooke Jerger and Dean set up a two-run single by Shania Johnson as Park Rapids led 9-2 in the sixth.

     Brooke Jerger’s run-scoring grounder concluded the scoring in the seventh.

     Brooke Jerger went 2 for 5 to lead the Panthers’ six-hit attack. Dean picked up the win by allowing two runs on three hits with nine strikeouts over the first six innings.

Panthers defeat NCW

     The Panthers combined 12 hits with six walks and four NCW errors to claim the tournament title.

     Singles by Brooke Jerger, Naeve and Johanning and two errors gave the Panthers a 5-0 lead in the first.

     A single by Kinkel, an RBI double by Hope Johnson, a single by Brooke Jerger, a two-run double by Naeve, singles by Dean and Bailee Jerger, a run-scoring grounder by Shania Johnson, and a sacrifice fly by Johanning pushed the Panthers’ lead to 11-0 in the fourth.

     A two-out double by Brooke Jerger, an RBI single by Naeve and a two-run home run by Dean capped off Park Rapids’ scoring in the fifth.

     Brooke Jerger went 3 for 4 with three runs, Naeve went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI, Dean went 2 for 2 with three runs and two RBI, Shania Johnson had two RBI and Johanning drove in three runs to pace the Panthers’ offensive attack.

     Bailee Jerger and Dean combined on a five-hitter.
