Panthers defeat Mid-State rival Northern Lakes

Dylan Weaver scored twice and the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team used a 43-20 advantage in shots for a 5-2 Mid-State Conference win over Northern Lakes Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

     Dylan Weaver scored twice and the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team used a 43-20 advantage in shots for a 5-2 Mid-State Conference win over Northern Lakes Thursday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.

     Weaver opened up the scoring at the 5:48 mark of the first period on an assist from Matt DeLaHunt before Chase Brand’s shorthanded goal at the 10:22 mark gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Connor Kennedy assisted on that goal. Jake Hyytinen’s power-play goal at the 14:48 mark pulled Northern Lakes to within 2-1.

     The Panthers controlled the second period as an 18-5 edge in shots helped extend the lead to 4-1. Kennedy scored on an assist from Brand at the 8:32 mark while Brand and Kennedy assisted on a goal by Cole Coborn at the 13:29 mark.

     Weaver’s goal at the 11:17 mark of the third period gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead. Hyytinen’s power-play goal with 1:06 to play concluded the scoring.

     Goalie Ben Naugle made 18 saves for the win as the Panthers improved to 3-1 in the conference and 3-5 overall. The Lightning fell to 1-2 against conference opponents and 4-5 overall.
