Blackduck built a 20-13 halftime lead and held on for a 43-39 Northwoods Conference victory over the Nevis girls basketball team Friday night at Blackduck.
Montana Baker scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds while Annalise Ahrendt and Emma Bliss combined for 16 points. Bliss also had eight rebounds, Madisyn Lucas had four steals and Ashley Pyburn had three assists for the Tigers, who shot 21 percent (11 for 53) from the field and had 30 turnovers.
The loss dropped Nevis to 3-9 in the conference and 4-16 overall while Blackduck improved to 4-10 in conference play and 6-16 overall.
"Once again our shooting percentage killed us. We didn't have a pulse in the first half. We were sloppy with the ball, we couldn't make a pass into the post and we just played bad for the first 15 minutes. We just cannot afford to do this. We are not a team that is going to come back from behind very easily. To their credit, the girls came out fighting in the second half and it ended up being a close game," said Nevis head coach Brad Neyens. "It was a tough week for us, going 0-3. We are a young, inexperienced team that will get better the more we play. We have a lot of work to do to get there, but I think we have the girls with the talent to make that happen."

Park Christian defeats Tigers
Park Christian used a 26-12 halftime lead to spark a 58-31 victory over the Tigers Thursday night at the Tiger Arena.
Baker's 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals led the Tigers. Katie Kamphaus pulled down six rebounds and Ahrendt had two assists as Nevis turned the ball over 24 times and shot 25 percent (12 for 49) from the field.
Park Christian improved to 12-10 on the season.
"We played much better against Park Christian," said Neyens. "We didn't turn the ball over as much as we usually do. Our struggles continue to be scoring points and shooting a good percentage. Shooting 25 percent from the field is not going to win many basketball games."

The Bears led 56-14 at the half in improving to 8-2 in the conference and 14-7 overall. C-G trails Pine River-Backus (11-1) and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (8-1) in the conference standings.

"We just didn't come out to play," said Neyens. "We came out sluggish and we can't afford to do that against a quality opponent like Clearbrook."
