Morgan breaks school record in long jump in season debut

Hannah Morgan had an impressive season debut in leading the Park Rapids girls track and field team to the title at the Lions Invitational at Gillett Wellness Center on the campus of Bemidji State University on Tuesday, March 26.

Hannah Morgan had an impressive season debut in leading the Park Rapids girls track and field team to the title at the Lions Invitational at Gillett Wellness Center on the campus of Bemidji State University on Tuesday, March 26.

Morgan broke the school record in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 1 inch to finish first and added a winning time of 28.44 in the 200-meter dash as the Panthers compiled 65.33 points to top the 22-team field. Morgan (who broke Linda Pachel's school record of 16-11.75 in the long jump that was set in 1985) joined Holly Johnson, Julia Johnson and Kendra Scholz on the winning 4 x 200 relay team that clocked a 1:55.60 and also placed third in the 60 dash in 8.25 to account for 36 points.

Nadia Yliniemi Hensel was the runner-up in the long jump at 16-7 while Jada Renneberg, Morgan Koppelman, Natalia Lopez and Kamree Carlson placed fourth in the 4 x 800 relay in 11:12.30. Carlson placed fifth in the shot put at 32-8; Holly Johnson, Koppelman, Lopez and Riley Pike finished fifth in the 4 x 400 relay in 4:34.74; Holly Johnson placed sixth in the 400 dash in 1:05.01; Julia Harmon finished sixth in the 3,200 run in 13:54.07; Renneberg placed seventh in the 1,600 run in 6:03.80; and Savana Damar tied for eighth in the pole vault by clearing 6-6 to round out the Panthers' team score.

Park Rapids placed ninth in the boys meet with 27 points as a winning time of 9:09.55 in the 4 x 800 relay by Kolby Brandt, Kaleb Stearns, Lane Monaghan and Seth Breitweser led the way.

Breitweser added a third-place time of 2:12.29 in the 800 run while the 4 x 400 relay team of Brandt, Chris Day, Breitweser and Nathan David finished fourth in 3:51.63. Kyron Wohlenhaus placed sixth in the 3,200 run in 11:48.85, Jake Reish finished seventh in the high jump at 5-6, and the 4 x 200 relay team of Josiah May, Jeff Haas, Jeremiah Engst and Hunter Brandt took eighth in 1:46.24 to round out the scoring for the Panthers.

Bemidji won the boys title with 114.66 points.

"I was happy with how the boys started the season off. It's just nice to get out there and compete," said Park Rapids head coach Andrew Lachowitzer. "We have a lot of new faces that will fit in well with the core of boys we have coming back. The boys have high expectations for themselves this season and this was a great start."

For Nevis, Andrea Dudley placed third in the triple jump at 31-4 and seventh in the 60 hurdles in 10.74 to score 8 points for 18th place in the girls meet. Luke DeWulf finished third in the 60 dash in 7.43 and sixth in the long jump at 18-5.25 while Jack McNamee placed eighth in the 800 run in 2:18.58 as the Tigers scored 10 points for 16th place in the boys meet.

United North Central finished 11th in the boys meet with 14 points as Zach Floyd took fifth in the long jump at 18-6, Rashad Lincoln finished fifth in the 60 dash in 7.47, and Floyd (sixth in 24.87) and Lincoln (eighth in 25.36) placed in the 200 dash. Tyler Shepersky scored the Warriors' other 2 points with a 15.07 in the wheelchair 60 meters and a 2:43.79 in the wheelchair 800 meters.
