Midway scores 60 runs, wins three times

Midway continued to dominate Lake and Pine League amateur baseball play by scoring 60 runs in three victories last weekend.

The Snurdbirds belted out 27 hits in a 31-9 victory at Nevis and followed with 14 hits in a 15-2 win over Leech Lake at Walker last Saturday. Midway had 14 hits in a 14-0 win at Wolf Lake Sunday. All three games ended after seven innings via the 10-run rule.

Those three wins lifted Midway to 3-0 in the North Division and 5-0 overall in league play. Earlier in the season, the Snurdbirds defeated Huntersville 12-7 and Red Eye 28-0. Midway is 9-3 overall.

Midway edges Huntersville

Midway capitalized on 15 walks and five errors to defeat Huntersville in the league opener on May 6.

Jake Lund went 2 for 4 with an RBI, Derek Dormanen went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI, and Shane Hendrickson went 1 for 6 with three RBI to lead Midway's seven-hit attack. Zach Etter, Mike Baso and Robert Weaver scored two runs each. Brett Dormanen picked up the win in relief as an eight-run seventh inning sparked the win.

Midway routs Red Eye

A 19-hit attack sparked Midway past Red Eye on May 13.

Etter went 4 for 5 with five runs and two RBI and Steve Wetterling went 3 for 5, including a home run, with two runs and six RBI to lead the Snurdbirds. Lund went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI, Alex White went 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI, Sean Dormanen went 2 for 3 with four runs, and Pete Marjamaa went 3 for 5 with three runs. Jeff Marjamaa scored three runs while Brad Lusti scored two runs and drove in a pair.

Etter earned the win by combining with Hendrickson and Lusti on a one-hitter. Midway scored 10 runs in the fourth to break the game open.

Midway defeats Nevis

Midway scored eight runs in the second and third innings and four times in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings in coasting past the North Stars.

Wetterling led the offense by going 5 for 6 with three home runs, six runs scored and eight RBI. Hendrickson went 2 for 3 with a homer, three runs and four RBI while Etter went 3 for 6 with a homer, five runs and three RBI. Drew Rasmussen stole four bases and went 3 for 7 with three runs and two RBI, Weaver went 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBI, Jeff Marjamaa went 3 for 6 with three runs, Brett Dormanen went 3 for 3 with two runs, and Sean Dormanen went 4 for 6 with three runs and three RBI. Baso and Kyle Dormanen each drove in two runs.

Midway defeats Walleyes

Hendrickson's pair of home runs powered Midway past the Walleyes at Walker.

Hendrickson went 4 for 4 with four runs and five RBI while Jake Lund went 4 for 4 with three runs and three RBI. Etter also hit a homer and went 2 for 4 with three RBI.

Rasmussen scored three runs, Stetson Burkman scored two runs and Bobby Lusti drove in two runs. Midway took control by scoring six times in the second and four times in the third.

Brad Lusti earned the win and combined with Sean Dormanen and Travis Lusti on a one-hitter. Both Walker runs were unearned.

Midway blanks Wolf Lake

A six-run second inning sparked Midway past Wolf Lake.

An RBI double by Baso and RBI singles by Rasmussen, Etter and Lund in the second inning produced the winning runs.

Rasmussen followed with an RBI single in the third before Wetterling's three-run homer pushed the lead to 10-0 in the fourth. Rasmussen and Weaver drove in runs during a four-run sixth.

Rasmussen went 3 for 5 with four RBI, Wetterling went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI, and Weaver went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI.

Lund picked up the win by allowing one hit and striking out eight in five innings. Hendrickson gave up two hits over the final two innings.

Cory Odland took the loss for Wolf Lake. Derek Pihlaja took the loss in Wolf Lake's 7-1 loss to Cass Lake last Saturday. Tyler Trosen struck out 17 Wolf Lake batters in a winning effort.

Midway 4-3 out of league

The Snurdbirds are 4-3 in seven non-league games.

The Snurdbirds opened the season with a 10-4 win over Vergas. A nine-run sixth inning led Midway to that win. Hendrickson had a home run and drove in three while Baso went 2 for 5. Etter earned the win in relief.

Victoria swept a doubleheader on May 19, winning the first game 7-6 and the second game 5-2. Etter went 2 for 4 with two runs and Brad Lusti went 2 for 3 and took the loss in relief in the first game. Lund, Derek Dormanen and Weaver had two hits each in the second game. Wetterling drove in two runs and Lund took the loss.

Rasmussen hit a homer and went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI while Lund went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI in leading Midway past Detroit Lakes on May 30. Etter went 3 for 6 and scored three times while Brad Lusti drove in a pair and picked up the win.

The Snurdbirds won two of three games at the Lake Henry tournament. Midway opened with a 4-1 win over Granite City and followed with a 3-2 loss to Regal on June 2. Midway defeated Lake Henry 6-5 on June 3.

Lund threw a four-hitter and struck out 13 in the win over Granite City. Rasmussen went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Derek Dormanen went 3 for 4 in that game.

Etter and Weaver hit solo homers in the loss to Regal. Etter went 2 for 3 to pace Midway's five-hit attack and took the loss.

Midway overcame six errors and rallied from a 5-1 deficit to defeat Lake Henry. Lund went 2 for 3 with two RBI, Baso went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Brett Dormanen went 2 for 3 with two RBI to lead the Snurdbirds. Hendrickson allowed four hits and five unearned runs in a complete-game effort.
