Midway qualifies for state Class C tournament

Park Rapids and Wolf Lake were eliminated from the Region 14C amateur baseball tournament with first-round losses.

The Midway Snurdbirds are returning to the state Class C amateur baseball tournament.

Midway opened the Region 14C tournament with wins over Wadena/Deer Creek (5-3) and Bluffton (2-1) at Deer Creek on Saturday (Aug. 7) and a 12-2 win in eight innings over Perham at Perham on Sunday (Aug. 8) to advance to the title game and guarantee a spot in the state tournament.

Wadena/Deer Creek led 3-2 before Sam Beck’s two-run home run in the seventh inning and Chris Baso’s solo shot in the eighth rallied the Snurdbirds to the win. Zach Etter’s two-run double gave Midway a 2-0 lead in the second before the Shockers took the lead by scoring once in the third and twice in the fifth. Stetson Burkman went the distance for the win while Preston Riewer contributed three hits. Midway defeated W/DC 12-3 on May 9.

John Dormanen threw a complete game and Etter belted solo homers in the seventh and ninth innings to propel Midway past Bluffton, which had defeated Midway 3-2 on July 25.

The Snurdbirds received another solid pitching performance against Perham as Etter earned the win and Riewer pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Midway defeated the Pirates 7-1 on July 4.


Midway, the No. 2 seed in the Lake and Pine League, improved to 15-5 and will play for the Region 14C title at Perham at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14. The Region 14C winner and runner-up will advance to the state Class C tournament, which begins on Aug. 20 at Chaska, Waconia and Hamburg.

The Park Rapids Esox and Wolf Lake Wolf Pack were eliminated from the Region 14C tournament with first-round losses. Verndale defeated Park Rapids 15-12 at Deer Creek while Perham edged Wolf Lake 9-7 at Perham on Friday, Aug. 6. The Esox end the season with a 6-10 record. Park Rapids was the No. 4 seed and Wolf Lake was the No. 5 seed out of the Lake and Pine League.

In the other Region 14C games, Bluffton blanked Verndale 10-0 in seven innings, New York Mills topped Sebeka 7-4, Perham edged Nimrod 3-1, Perham defeated New York Mills 7-3, W/DC eliminated Verndale 6-0, Nimrod blanked Sebeka 3-0, New York Mills ousted W/DC 11-1 in seven innings and Bluffton eliminated Nimrod 9-4.
