Midway pounds at 13 hits to defeat Kasson in state tournament

A three-run seventh inning and seven-run eighth inning sparked Midway to a 13-3 win over Kasson in the first round of the state Class C amateur baseball playoffs Friday night at Bird Island.

Midway, which scored a run in the third and another run in the fifth, trailed 3-2 before a solo home run by Jake Lund and a two-run double by Jeff Marjamaa gave the Snurdbirds a 5-3 lead in the seventh.

Midway then scored seven runs in the eighth and added another run in the ninth to seal the win.

The Snurdbirds belted out 16 hits with Shane Hendrickson going 4 for 6 with a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBI and Drew Rasmussen going 3 for 6 with a pair of doubles and a run. Lund went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI, Vergas draftee AJ Bunkowski went 2 for 3 with three runs, and Brad Lusti drove in three runs.

Zach Etter, Steve Wetterling, Mike Baso, Jeff Marjamaa and Lusti also scored runs while Wetterling and Baso each had an RBI.

Lund picked up the win, allowing eight hits and three runs while striking out seven in six innings. Wolf Lake draftee Corey Pudas earned the save with three innings of scoreless relief. Pudas gave up one hit and struck out three as Midway improved to 27-6 on the season.

The Snurdbirds play St. Joseph in the second round Friday night at 6 at Willmar. The winner of that game will play Sunday at 11 a.m. at Willmar while the loser is eliminated.
