An 11-0 run to end the first half and a 20-0 run early in the second half sparked the Menahga girls basketball team to a 54-34 win over Pillager in the Park Region Conference opener at Menahga on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Pillager jumped out to a 7-2 lead before 3-pointers by Kate Hendrickson and Martha Peterson and layups off steals by Janie Tormanen and Tara Hendrickson gave the Braves a 12-7 advantage. The Huskies led 19-18 before a jumper by Tara Hendrickson, a 3-pointer by Peterson and a basket off a rebound by Kate Hendrickson gave Menahga a 29-19 lead at the half.
The Huskies cut the gap to 29-24 to open the second half before Menahga used a 3-pointer by Maryn Pinoniemi, two layups off steals by Tormanen, a pair of layups by Tara Hendrickson, and a jumper by Lela Peterson to claim a 49-24 advantage.
Tara Hendrickson scored 13 points and Tormanen added 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Braves. Kate Hendrickson had seven rebounds while Tara Hendrickson (5) and Lela Peterson (4) combined for nine of Menahga’s 25 steals. The Braves improved to 2-1 despite making only 3 of 29 3-point attempts.
Emma Schmit’s 10 points and Sadie Hopman’s 12 rebounds led the Huskies, who had 34 turnovers in falling to 1-1.
