Menahga solidifies section seeding with win over Park Rapids

The Braves maintained the top spot in the Section 8AA North standings with the 3-0 victory.

Menahga secured its spot atop the Section 8AA North volleyball standings with a 3-0 win over Park Rapids at Menahga on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

The Braves improved to 4-1 against section opponents with a 25-21, 25-8, 25-13 victory.

Set 1 was close until Menahga went on a 5-1 run to break open a 20-20 tie. Amanda Lake and Janie Tormanen opened the set with ace serves while a block by Michaela Skoog and a kill by Lela Peterson gave the Braves a 5-2 lead. Two tips by Alison Scholz and kills by Abby Felts, Chloe Tretbar and Kate Aukes put Park Rapids in front 11-8. Erica Tormanen served two aces to give Menahga a 12-11 edge before kills by Aukes and Riley Pike put the Panthers in front 14-12. Janie Tormanen responded with two kills as the Braves trailed 15-14. A kill by Tretbar provided a 20-18 advantage before Menahga responded as Erica Tormanen served five straight points and Janie Tormanen had two kills to close out the opening set.

Menahga controlled the next two sets to complete the sweep.

Lake served the Braves to a 7-0 lead to start Set 2 with Janie Tormanen and Maryn Pinoniemi contributing kills. Janie Tormanen followed a kill with an ace during a 7-0 service run as Menahga built a 15-2 advantage. Pinoniemi and Meagan Holtz had kills during that stretch. A tip by Lake and a kill by Pinoniemi made it 17-4 before Pinoniemi served two aces and Allie Pfeifer had a kill for a 22-5 lead. A tip by Holtz, a kill by Janie Tormanen and an ace serve by Journie Schoon closed out that set. Pike had a pair of kills for the Panthers in that set.


Ace serves by Lake and Lela Peterson, two kills by Pinoniemi and a block by Janie Tormanen gave Menahga a 6-3 to start Set 3. Kills by Marriyam Ejaz and Quinn Hunter and an ace serve by Felts pulled the Panthers to within 8-7 before a kill and an ace serve by Crystal Haataja along with a pair of blocks and a kill by Janie Tormanen pushed the lead to 15-8. A kill by Menahga’s Molly Hendrickson was countered with a tip by Felts as the Braves led 21-13. Pinoniemi served two aces with Skoog contributing a kill as Menahga closed out the match.

Janie Tormanen’s eight kills and 11 service points, Pinoniemi’s five ace serves and 10 set assists, and Lake’s 13 service points and 10 set assists led Menahga’s offense. Janie Tormanen had four solo blocks while Erica Tormanen (13), Pinoniemi (11) and Pfeifer (10) had double digits in digs defensively. The Braves ha 30 kills with 21 hitting errors and 14 ace serves with nine service errors while only having two errors on serve receive.

Menahga improved to 11-9 overall to maintain the No. 1 spot in the Section 8AA North standings with Thief River Falls (10-8), Roseau (10-12) and Warroad (10-12) following. The Panthers are currently in the No. 6 spot with an 0-7 record against section teams and a 3-15 overall mark.
