Menahga girls open season with 62-39 win over Perham

The Braves used a 20-4 run to open the game and a balanced scoring attack in coasting to the win.

Menahga used a 20-4 run to start the game to spark a 62-39 victory over Perham in the season-opening girls basketball game for both teams at Menahga on Friday, Nov. 22.

Lela Peterson hit four 3-pointers, Tara Hendrickson hit a jumper and scored on a layup, and Kate Hendrickson hit a jumper as the Braves took control from the start. Janie Tormanen scored off a rebound, Maryn Pinoniemi hit a jumper and Annie Lake scored on a layup as Menahga led 32-19 at the half.

After Perham cut the gap to 34-23, Martha Peterson and Pinoniemi hit a pair of 3-pointers each and Tormanen hit a jumper to give Menahga a 53-39 advantage. The Braves closed the game with a 9-0 run behind another 3-pointer by Martha Peterson and six free throws.

Tara Hendrickson had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds while Lela Peterson and Martha Peterson chipped in 12 points each. Pinoniemi and Kate Hendrickson combined for 16 points with Tormanen hauling down nine rebounds and Kate Hendrickson leading the way with four blocked shots and three assists. Lake had three steals as the Braves made 9 of 26 3-pointers and finished with 14 turnovers.

Katie Johnson scored 12 points to lead Perham, which went 5 for 13 on 3-pointers and turned the ball over 22 times.
