Menahga girls drop pair of games

The Braves fell to Henning 55-46 in a Park Region Conference game at home and lost to Frazee 48-46 in a road game.

After trailing for most of the first half, Henning used five 3-pointers to take control in a 55-46 Park Region Conference win over the Menahga girls basketball team at Menahga on Friday, Dec. 6.

Two layups by Tara Hendrickson, a 3-pointer and a layup off a steal by Martha Peterson, and a jumper by Janie Tormanen gave Menahga an 11-4 lead at the 11:43 mark of the first half. Henning followed with a 14-3 run to claim an 18-14 edge before the Braves hit six free throws to take a 23-18 lead with 1:04 to play in the first half. A 3-pointer by Ellie Dague helped the Hornets tie the game at 23-23 at the break.

A pair of 3-pointers by Megan Weber offset layups by Tormanen and Hendrickson and a three-point play by Hendrickson as Henning led 37-30. A 3-pointer by Peterson and two layups by Hendrickson pulled the Braves to within 38-37, but two 3-pointers by Weber helped the Hornets pull away.

Hendrickson finished with 22 points while Peterson scored 10 points and Tormanen pulled down six rebounds for the Braves, who fell to 1-1 in conference play.

Dague’s 21 points and 10 rebounds and Weber’s 14 points led the Hornets, who improved to 2-0 in the conference and 3-0 overall.

Frazee rallies

Frazee closed the game with a 10-4 run to rally for a 48-46 win over the Braves in a game between Section 8AA teams at Frazee on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Three-pointers by Tormanen and Maryn Pinoniemi sparked Menahga to a 9-9 tie before a layup, a jumper and a 3-pointer by Dani Piche and a 3-pointer by Annissa Antonsen gave the Hornets a 19-11 lead.

The Braves responded with an 18-4 run, starting with an 8-2 spurt to end the half. A jumper by Megan Hendrickson, a 3-pointer by Kate Hendrickson and a layup by Tormanen made it 21-19 at the break before a 3-pointer by Peterson and two inside baskets by Tormanen gave Menahga a 29-23 lead with 13:09 to play.

Paige Oswald followed a 3-pointer with a layup and Paige Ziegler scored on a layup during an 11-0 run as Frazee claimed a 34-29 advantage. A pair of 3-pointers by Amanda Lake, two layups by Tormanen and a jumper by Lela Peterson gave the Braves a 42-38 lead before two baskets by Oswald and a three-point play by Annika Reierson sparked Frazee’s game-ending 10-4 run.

Tormanen had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Menahga. Kate Hendrickson pulled down 10 rebounds and Tara Hendrickson had nine rebounds and six assists as the Braves fell to 1-1 in section games.

Ziegler’s 14 points and 10 rebounds along with Oswald’s 13 points led the Hornets, who improved to 1-1 in section play and 3-1 overall.
