Melrose wins title at Park Rapids Invitational

The host Panthers finished third in this five-team girls swimming and diving meet.

Addison Lauwagie and Emma Vrieze clocked winning times in leading the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team to third place at the five-team Park Rapids Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Lauwagie won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.96 and Vrieze topped the field in the 500 freestyle in 5:58.82 at the Area High School pool as the Panthers compiled 464.50 points. Melrose claimed the team title with 551.50 points with Sauk Centre finishing second with 511.50 points. Detroit Lakes was fourth with 432.50 points and Perham/New York Mills was fifth with 239 points.

Vrieze also clocked a runner-up 2:11.47 while Lizzie Seifert was third in 2:16.04 in the 200 freestyle while Lauwagie finished second in the 100 freestyle in 57.92. Also clocking runner-up times were Massie Lee with a 6:09.54 in the 500 freestyle along with Lauwagie, Seifert, Mylee Edevold and Vrieze in the 200 freestyle relay with a 2:03.39 and Vrieze, Seifert, Lee and Lauwagie in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:58.66.

Turning in the Panthers’ top finishes in the other events were Claire Voigt, Lee, Edevold and Amelia Bagstad in the 200 medley relay (fourth in 2:10.34); Lee in the 200 individual medley (fourth in 2:33.75); Allie Rowland in diving (ninth with 151.40 points); Edevold in the 100 butterfly (fourth in 1:11.95); Maya Deshayes in the 100 backstroke (sixth in 1:12.30); and Nora Cederstrom in the 100 breaststroke (sixth in 1:21.73).

Stella Schirmers won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke while Mikayla Haskamp finished first in diving to account for three of Sauk Centre’s five winning performances. Haskamp also swam on Sauk Centre’s winning 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay units. Hallie Drossel won the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke while swimming on Melrose’s winning 200 medley relay team. Detroit Lakes’ Faith Hamm won the other two events by leading the pack in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
