Lakers sweep Panthers to extend winning streak

Detroit Lakes extended its winning streak with a 3-0 Mid-State Conference win over the Park Rapids volleyball team at the Area High School gym on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The Lakers prevailed 25-15, 25-19, 25-14 for their sixth victory in a row.

After facing a 4-1 deficit in Set 1, consecutive kills by Abby Felts sparked the Panthers to a 6-6 tie. Laken Weaver served five straight points as Detroit Lakes claimed a 12-6 advantage. A tip by Riley Pike and a kill by Sydney Lange kept Park Rapids within 17-12 before the Lakers went on an 8-3 run to close out the set. Lange and Chloe Tretbar combined for a block for the Panthers during that stretch.

A kill by Felts, two winning tips by Peyten Sherk, a kill by Lange and a block by Tretbar gave Park Rapids an early 7-6 edge in Set 2. Another block by Tretbar and Lange, a kill by Quinn Hunter and an ace serve by Abby Kirlin pushed the Panthers’ lead to 11-7. Alexis Lundeen followed with four service points as Detroit Lakes took a 12-11 lead. Park Rapids tied the set at 13-13 before two ace serves by Autumn Kulik sparked a 12-6 run by the Lakers. A tip by Pike, kills by Tretbar and Hunter, and a winning dig by Tretbar led the Panthers down the stretch.

A kill by Pike, a winning push by Lange and an ace serve by Keely Peterson led the Panthers to an 8-8 tie at the start of Set 3. Detroit Lakes held a 12-11 advantage before four service points by Jordyn Johnson and three service points by Faith Keller gave the Lakers a 21-13 cushion. Macey Lund had a kill during that stretch for the Panthers. Three service points by Kulik ended the match.

Pike and Lange had four kills each and Peterson had 10 digs to lead the Panthers.

Detroit Lakes improved to 2-1 in the conference and 6-1 overall while the Panthers fell to 0-5 in Mid-State matches and 0-8 overall. Pequot Lakes tops the conference standings with a 4-0 record while Staples-Motley and Aitkin are 2-1. Crosby-Ironton sits at 2-4.
