Ty Kennett scored four goals and Zak Kennett had a goal and six assists during a stretch of seven unanswered goals that ignited Red Lake Falls to a 10-4 Section 8A victory over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team at the Walker Area Community Center on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
After Zak Kennett opened the scoring 4:50 into the game, the Panthers took a 2-1 lead behind goals by Jack Slagle and Joey Hillukka. Jaxson Lund assisted on Slagle’s goal at the 5:09 while Nash Mitchell set up Hillukka’s goal 47 seconds later. Goals by Ty Kennett at the 6:43 mark and Logan Klipping at the 7:47 mark gave RLF the lead for good. RLF held a 16-7 advantage in shots in the opening period in building a 3-2 lead.
Park Rapids was outshot 15-13 in the second period as the Eagles capitalized on four penalties to score three power-play goals to extend the lead to 7-2. Zak Kennett scored 1:53 into the second period before assisting on a pair of power-play goals by Ty Kennett at the 8:41 and 9:27 marks. The Kennetts set up Blane Schmitz’s power-play goal with 5:10 to play in the period.
Ty Kennett opened the third period with a shorthanded goal 48 seconds into a Park Rapids power play that began with :09 remaining in the second period to give RLF an 8-2 advantage. The Panthers scored twice in a span of 2:28 when Ethan Eischens and Lund assisted on a goal by Reed Sharp 2:19 into the final stanza while Joshua Crandall set up a goal by Coby Hagen at the 4:47 mark. RLF, which held a 16-13 edge in shots in that period, capped off the scoring on Caleb Pahlen’s goal at the 11:56 mark and Shea LaBrecque’s goal with 41 seconds to play.
Goalie Ben Standlie made 37 saves as the Panthers fell to 1-10 against section opponents and 4-18 overall.

Zak Kennett finished with two goals and six assists as RLF, which defeated the Panthers 7-2 on Jan. 11, improved to 6-3 in the section and 16-6 overall.
Warroad (20-2), East Grand Forks (15-4-2), Thief River Falls (12-9-1), Detroit Lakes (11-9-2) and RLF are currently at the top of the section standings with Kittson Central (14-7), Lake of the Woods (6-15), Crookston (2-19) and Bagley/Fosston (5-13) joining the Panthers in the lower half. Warroad (No. 3), EGF (No. 5) and Thief River Falls (No. 10) were rated in the latest state Class A poll.
