Kading, Carlson qualify for state tennis tournament

Mary Kading and Alyssa Carlson earned a return trip to the state Class A girls tennis tournament after winning a Section 8A true-second doubles match Tuesday at Fargo.

Mary Kading and Alyssa Carlson earned a return trip to the state Class A girls tennis tournament after winning a Section 8A true-second doubles match Tuesday at Fargo.

The Park Rapids duo, which lost to Crookston's Hayley Myrold and Sarah Derosier in Saturday's Section 8A championship match at Grand Forks, defeated Crookston's Rachel Lariviere and Jaclyn Proulx 6-4, 7-5 at Fargo's Courts Plus to finish second and qualify for state. Kading and Mindy Lawrence teamed up to defeat Carlson and Alyssa Klingenberg in last year's section championship match as Park Rapids sent two doubles teams to state for the first time in school history.

Kading and Carlson will make their state debut as doubles partners next Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

In other Park Rapids varsity sports action this week:

The Park Rapids girls cross-country team finished second and the boys placed 10th at Monday's Park Rapids Invitational at Headwaters Country Club. Lydia Lutz and Victoria Lutz finished second and fourth (respectively) as the Panthers trailed Perham in the team standings. Taylor Kimball placed 20th to lead the Park Rapids boys. Perham also won the boys title.

The Park Rapids volleyball team celebrated Senior Night with a 25-19, 25-14, 25-12 Mid-State Conference win over Staples-Motley Tuesday night.
