By Adrian Glass-Moore The story of a Devils Lake runner who picked up an injured competitor during a cross country race and carried her about a quarter of a mile showed up on TV screens across the country on Wednesday. The “Ellen DeGeneres Show” picked up the story and invited the two girls, Devils Lake High School senior Melanie Bailey and Fargo South High School student Danielle LeNoue, to fly to Los Angeles on Monday.
“I love this story so much,” DeGeneres said before inviting the pair on stage. “During her final cross country meet of the season, our next guest ended her race early to help an injured runner from a rival high school.” “To me, that is winning the race,” she added. Bailey described finding LeNoue crying and in pain during the Eastern Dakota Conference cross country meet Oct. 11 at Ponderosa Golf Course near Glyndon, Minn. She decided to stop and help instead of just running past her, as many other runners had done. “About 50 people had passed me, kept running,” LeNoue said. “… All of a sudden Melanie came and picked me up. It’s crazy.” “She was crying really hard,” Bailey said. "She needed help and I couldn’t just leave her there.” As a result of helping her competitor, Bailey finished 178th. DeGeneres ended the segment by giving Bailey a massive trophy inscribed with “Melanie Bailey – 178th Place.” The girls screamed when DeGeneres told them they would also receive a seven-night stay at Breezes Resort in the Bahamas.  By Adrian Glass-MooreThe story of a Devils Lake runner who picked up an injured competitor during a cross country race and carried her about a quarter of a mile showed up on TV screens across the country on Wednesday. The “Ellen DeGeneres Show” picked up the story and invited the two girls, Devils Lake High School senior Melanie Bailey and Fargo South High School student Danielle LeNoue, to fly to Los Angeles on Monday.
