EGF eliminates Panthers with 9-0 win in 8A playoffs

Madison McDonald, Kate Johnson and Lainey Pesch scored two goals apiece as East Grand Forks eliminated the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley girls hockey team from the Section 8A playoffs with a 9-0 quarterfinal victory Feb. 8 at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.

The Green Wave finished with a 54-5 advantage in shots on goal to defeat Park Rapids for the third time this season and advance to the section semifinals.

Goals by Kara Ellis and McDonald gave EGF a 2-0 lead after the first period. Johnson, Pesch and CJ Mack scored in the second period to give the Green Wave a 5-0 advantage. Goals by Lynzy Pesch, Johnson, McDonald and Lainey Pesch concluded the scoring in the third period.

EGF, the No. 3 seed in the section, defeated the Panthers 12-1 on Jan. 7 behind a 65-10 advantage in shots and 6-0 on Jan. 19 behind a 78-11 advantage in shots.

Goalie Kylee Pachel made 45 saves as the No. 6-seeded Panthers ended the season with a 0-21 record. EGF was rated No. 9 in the latest state Class A poll.

In the other section quarterfinal game on Feb. 8, No. 4 Detroit Lakes eliminated No. 5 Crookston 6-1. In the semifinals on Feb. 9 at Crookston, No. 1 Warroad shut out Detroit Lakes 16-0 and No. 2 Thief River Falls edged EGF 1-0 as the Green Wave end the season with a 15-9-2 record.

Warroad (the No. 1-rated team in the state) and Thief River Falls (the No. 7-rated Class A team) play for the section title Feb. 14 at Crookston at 7 p.m. Warroad defeated the Prowlers by scores of 3-1 and 5-0 during the regular season. Warroad will carry a 25-0-1 record while Thief River Falls will carry a 16-9 record into the section title game.
