Gymnasts make solid season debut

Jada Olson led Perham to a 137.10-122.80 victory over the Panthers.

It was a solid season opener for the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team.

The Panthers made their season debut by scoring at least 30 points in three events against Perham at the Area High School gym on Thursday, Jan. 28. Perham’s Jada Olson won all four events in leading the defending Section 8A champion and state Class A runner-up to a 137.10-122.80.

Park Rapids opened in vault where Abby Kirlin’s 8.50, Emma Berghuis’ 8.35, Halle Landstrom’s 8.20 and Morgan Koppelman’s 8.05 led to a 33.10 team score. Natalie Berghuis added a 7.70 as Olson took first with a 9.80.

On uneven parallel bars, the Panthers received a 27.00 behind Landstrom’s 7.65, Koppelman’s 7.15, Ally Holmer’s 6.40 and Natalie Backmann’s 5.80. Laney Vrieze had a 5.70. Olson led the field with a 9.45.

Landstrom’s 8.65, Koppelman’s 8.15, Shailyn Hayes’ 7.00 and Holmer’s 6.45 resulted in a 30.25 on balance beam. Kirlin followed with a 5.80. Olson received a 9.30 to take first.

The Panthers finished this dual meet in floor exercise with Landstrom’s 8.85, Koppelman’s 8.30, Emma Berghuis’ 7.70 and Hayes’ 7.60 leading to a 32.45. Kirlin chipped in a 7.45. Olson completed the sweep with a 9.30.

Olson captured the all-around title with a 37.85 while Landstrom shared runner-up honors with Perham’s Brittney Lorentz with a 33.50. Koppelman was fourth with a 31.65.

The Yellowjackets received marks of 36.05 in vault, 35.05 in floor, 33.95 on beam and 32.05 on bars.

Perham also won the junior varsity meet by a 111.30-96.15 magin.
