Gymnasts finish 7th in section

Detroit Lakes broke a school record in repeating as champions while the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team placed seventh at Saturday's Section 8A meet at Perham.

Detroit Lakes broke a school record in repeating as champions while the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team placed seventh at Saturday's Section 8A meet at Perham.

Detroit Lakes, the top-ranked team in the state and winner of the last two state Class A titles, captured the section title for the fourth year in a row with 151.95 points. Perham was second with a 143.65, followed by Alexandria (138.575), Fergus Falls (138.325), Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (129.15), Morris Area (125.925), Park Rapids (117.00), Little Falls (112.35) and Big Stone (109.65).

Park Rapids received a 32.30 in vault behind Olivia Fischer's 8.60, Erin Tooker's 8.30, Abby Kirlin's 8.10 and Jasmine Cease's 7.30. Detroit Lakes' Jackson Hegg took first with a 9.55.

In floor exercise, Katie Eischens' 8.05, Tooker's 7.65, Fischer's 7.40 and Kirlin's 6.85 led to a 29.95 team score for the Panthers. Detroit Lakes' Emma Disse led the way with a 9.80.

The Panthers used Eischens' 7.45, Fischer's 7.35, Kirlin's 6.95 and Tooker's 6.80 for a 28.55 on balance beam. Detroit Lakes' Peyton Jernberg topped the field with a 9.725.

Fischer's 7.05, Tooker's 6.70, Eischens' 6.30 and Amelia Berg's 6.15 gave the Panthers a 26.20 on uneven parallel bars. Hegg finished first with a 9.55.

Detroit Lakes' Cora Okeson won the all-around title with a 27.725. Fischer was 21st with a 30.40, Tooker took 23rd with a 29.45 and Kirlin was 27th with a 26.55.

The Lakers led the way in all four events with a 39.925 in floor, a 38.35 in vault, a 37.775 on beam and a 36.90 on bars to break their previous school record of 151.60.

"I felt the girls performed well. When it came down to our final score, I was proud of the girls," said Park Rapids head coach Rebecca Penning, whose team had a season high of 123.825. "This whole group of girls deserves a lot of credit for the work they have put in this season. I couldn't be more proud of the tone they have set for our program and I can't wait to see what they accomplish next."
