Park Rapids’ Abby Morris capped off her high school girls tennis career by winning one match in her second trip to the state Class A tournament.

Morris, who qualified for state in doubles as a freshman, opened the state tournament at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Pine City’s Ella Sell on Oct. 28. Morris regrouped to defeat Montevideo’s Emily Brace 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the consolation bracket. Morris entered the state tournament rated No. 12 while Sell was rated No. 6 in the state Class A poll.

“Tennis scoring can be strange as it looks like it wasn't a close match, but her first match was closer than the score shows,” said Park Rapids head coach Brianne Morris. “Her opponent just never made a mistake. In the match she won, Abby never made errors and just played some of her best tennis.”

That win pitted Morris against Wadena-Deer Creek’s Madison Packer for the fourth time this season. Morris prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in a dual meet during the regular season and Packer won 2-6, 6-4, 10-1 during the semifinals of the Section 8A team tournament. In the semifinals of the Section 8A singles tournament, Packer prevailed 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals en route to winning the section title. Morris qualified for state by winning a true-second match against Staples-Motley’s Lauren Rutten at the Section 8A tournament.

Packer again prevailed in the state consolation semifinals on Oct. 29 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Packer went on to defeat Providence Academy’s Annika Herberts Ott 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation title match. Packer entered the state tournament rated No. 8 in the Class A poll.

Minnehaha Academy’s Ancele Dolensek defeated teammate Isabelle Einess 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 in the championship match. Rochester Lourdes’ Ryann Winter defeated Eveleth-Gilbert’s Lydia Delich 6-1, 6-3 in the third-place match. Dolensek was rated No. 3, Einesss was rated No. 2, Winter was rated No. 1 and Delich was rated No. 4 in the state poll.

Morris concluded her senior season with a 22-8 record and her career with a 122-53 career record.

“She felt great about the way she played Madison. (She) just wishes it was in the consolation finals. Madison is a great player and they had some terrific matches over the years. They also had some wonderful points on Friday. Abby came off the court smiling and knew she played her best and was happy with how her season and career ended,” said Brianne Morris. “I thought Abby played some of her best tennis at state. She played well in all three matches. She definitely gave it her all, had fun and left everything on the court.”
