Pine River-Backus’ defense limited Menahga’s offense to only 76 yards as the Tigers remained undefeated with a 33-6 Section 6A and Northwest South District football victory at Menahga on Friday, Sept. 17.
The Tigers led 12-0 on Ethan Lodge’s 31-yard touchdown run with 8:12 to play in the first quarter and a 4-yard TD pass from Irvin Tulenchik to Chance Abraham at the 10:27 mark of the second quarter.
A 27-yard pass from Brock Berttunen to Connor Korvela with 5:05 to play in the second quarter made it 12-6.
Pine River-Backus controlled the second half with three more TDs. Irvin Tulenchik hit Carson Travis on a 17-yard TD reception at the 4:28 mark and Rian Struss on a 2-yard TD reception with :18 showing in the third quarter before Connor Tulenchik connected with Struss on a 20-yard TD reception with 8:30 to play to conclude the scoring.
PR-B, which was rated No. 10 in the latest state Class A poll, compiled 237 yards in offense with Irvin Tulenchik completing 7 of 11 passes for 99 yards and Lodge rushing 10 times for 63 yards. The win lifted the Tigers to 2-0 in section games and 3-0 in district play.
Berttunen completed 2 of 6 passes for 44 yards while Ethan Hendrickson rushed 13 times for 11 yards and Logan Torma gained 10 yards on five carries as the Braves were held to only 31 yards rushing. Torma led the defense with 11 tackles, Quincy Jantz was in on 10 tackles and Shawn Hendrickson contributed seven tackles as Menahga fell to 0-1 against section opponents and 1-2 overall.
In the other Section 6A games, Ottertail Central remained undefeated with a 37-14 win over Underwood, New York Mills edged Wadena-Deer Creek 20-12, Breckenridge shut out Frazee 6-0, Lake Park-Audubon routed Red Lake 51-0 and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley fell to Ada-Borup/West 39-0. In the other district game, Bagley lost to Red Lake County 46-22.
The Braves host Walker-Hackensack-Akeley this Friday night (Sept. 24) with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
