Josh Dykhoff’s 32-yard touchdown reception from Payton Rondestvedt and Teshe Loer’s two-point conversion reception in the fourth quarter lifted Wadena-Deer Creek to a 21-20 win over the Menahga football team at Wadena on Friday, Sept. 10.
After Dykhoff’s 5-yard TD reception gave W-DC a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, the Braves responded with 20 unanswered points to claim a 20-7 lead in the third quarter.
Brock Berttunen’s 1-yard TD run in the second quarter made it 7-6 at the half before Ethan Hendrickson’s 70-yard TD run and Logan Torma’s conversion run and Hendrickson’s 5-yard TD run gave Menahga a 20-7 lead.
W-DC pulled to within 20-13 on Dykhoff’s 21-yard TD reception late in the third quarter before the Wolverines scored the game-winner in the fourth quarter.
Menahga finished with 259 yards offensively with Hendrickson rushing 19 times for 141 yards and Torma adding 75 yards on 12 carries. Berttunen completed 1 of 4 passes for 30 yards with Ryan Tolkkinen making that reception.
Defensively, the Braves allowed 245 yards with Shawn Hendrickson and Ivan Anderson making seven tackles each and Marcus Peterson making six tackles. Isaiah Usher had an interception as Menahga fell to 1-1 on the season.
Rondestvedt completed 10 of 22 passes for 132 yards and rushed 14 times for 47 yards to lead the Wolverines’ offense. Tyson Barthel had four receptions for 79 yards and Dykhoff had three catches for 43 yards. The win evened W-DC’s record at 1-1.
In the other Week 2 games involving Section 6A teams, Ottertail Central defeated Pillager 20-6, Pine River-Backus routed Bagley 58-14, Underwood defeated Roseau 38-18, Breckenridge defeated Parkers Prairie 20-8 and Lake Park-Audubon lost to Mahnomen/Waubun 33-8.
The Braves will host Pine River-Backus this Friday night (Sept. 17) with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
