Football: Joe Houchin's three TD receptions lead Tigers past Park Christian

Nevis improves to 6-1 on the season with a 30-6 victory.

Joe Houchin caught three touchdown passes in leading Nevis to a 30-6 Section 6 9-man football victory over Park Christian at Moorhead on Friday, Oct. 15.

Ethan Klimek hit Houchin on a 40-yard TD pass and Aiden Thompson on the conversion as the Tigers led 8-0 with 7:51 to play in the first quarter.

Nevis extended its lead to 15-0 on Ian Ahrendt’s 4-yard TD run and Klimek’s kick at the 9:50 mark of the second quarter.

Caden Larson’s 80-yard TD reception from Max Albrecht with 5:06 remaining in the first half cut the gap to 15-6.

Nevis sealed the win on Houchin’s 40-yard TD reception and Cain Mitchell’s conversion run with 5:00 left in the third quarter and Houchin’s 60-yard TD catch and Klimek’s kick with 8:15 to play.


Klimek completed 10 of 20 passes for 233 yards with Houchin hauling in four passes for 149 yards and Mitchell making four catches for 50 yards. JP Benson added a 31-yard catch. Ahrendt led the rushing attack with 91 yards on 22 carries as the Tigers racked up 373 yards in offense.

Defensively, the Tigers forced four turnovers with Ethan Lewis making an interception and recovering a fumble. Mitchell also intercepted a pass and Ahrendt recovered a fumble. Lewis led the defense with 12 tackles while Thompson was in on nine tackles, Houchin made eight tackles and Ahrendt was in on seven tackles as the Tigers improved to 6-1 this season.

Albrecht threw for 130 yards with Larson hauling in 102 receiving yards as Park Christian fell to 3-4.

In the other games involving Section 6 teams, Fertile-Beltrami shut out Blackduck 40-0, Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal defeated Clearbrook-Gonvick 12-0 and Cass Lake-Bena topped Laporte 4-20. Fertile-Beltrami, which was rated No. 5 in this week’s state poll, improved to 7-0 while NCE/UH joined Nevis at 6-1. Clearbrook-Gonvick (4-3), Blackduck (3-4), CL-B (1-6) and Laporte (0-7) round out the section standings. The Tigers were rated No. 10 and NCE/UH shared the No. 11 spot in the state poll.

The Tigers host NCE/UH in the regular season finale Wednesday night (Oct. 20) with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
