Detroit Lakes defeats gymnasts in dual meet

Halle Landstrom led the Panthers in all four events to finish third in all-around against the Lakers.

Jackson Hegg finished first in all four events to win the all-around title in leading Detroit Lakes to a 139.60-120.20 victory over the Park Rapids-Menahga-Nevis gymnastics team at Detroit Lakes on Jan. 28.

Hegg posted scores of 9.55 on uneven parallel bars, 9.40 in vault and balance beam, and 9.35 in floor exercise for a 37.70 all-around score. Gabby Whitworth was the runner-up in three events and in all-around with a 35.65. The Lakers are ranked No. 6 in this week’s state Class A poll with a 142.54 average.

Halle Landstrom finished third in all-around with a 33.20, led by third-place finishes in vault with an 8.60 and in floor with an 8.50. Landstrom also led the Panthers with an 8.40 on beam and a 7.70 on bars.

Emma Berghuis’ 8.25, Jordyn Novak’s 8.20 and Morgan Koppelman’s 8.15 rounded out Park Rapids’ 33.20 team score in vault. Koppelman (8.05), Shailyn Hayes (6.75) and Erica Johnson (6.55) followed Landstrom in floor for a 29.85 team score. The Panthers received a 29.25 on beam as Koppelman’s 8.25, Johnson’s 6.35 and Hayes’ 6.25 completed the team score. Rounding out the Panthers’ 27.90 team score on bars were Koppelman with a 6.95, Ally Holmer with a 6.70 and Johnson with a 6.55.

Koppelman was fourth in all-around with a 31.40 while Johnson placed fifth with a 27.40 as the Panthers fell to 2-4 in dual meets.

Detroit Lakes also defeated the Panthers in the junior varsity meet by a 120.60-98 margin. Posting the top scores for the Panthers were Natalie Berghuis and McKenzie Hagen in vault (8.00), Holmer on beam (6.40) and floor (6.30), and Rachel Ulvin on bars (5.40) and all-around (24.20).
