Depth lifts DL to Mid-State girls swim title

Paige Fritze earned all-conference honors in four events in leading the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team to runner-up honors at Friday’s Mid-State Conference meet at the Area High School pool.

Fritze joined Kayla Andersen, Tea Nyland and Lauren Rossman to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1:56.61. That broke the conference record of 1:58.66 set by Park Rapids’ Brandi Werner, Nikki Schumacher, Katie Carroll and Sarah Ament in 2005.

Fritze won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.23 and 100 backstroke in 1:04.78 before joining Rossman, Nyland and Alyza Edevold on the winning 400 freestyle relay team, which clocked a 3:58.10.

Also earning all-conference honors with winning performances for the Panthers were Nyland in the 100 butterfly (1:04.50) and Andersen in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.24).

Those six winning efforts led the Panthers to 410 points. Detroit Lakes, which had three first-place finishes, relied on its depth to claim the conference title with 439 points. Perham was third with 280 points and Staples-Motley took fourth with 192 points.

Earning all-conference honorable mention honors by placing second for the Panthers were Nyland in the 200 individual medley (2:26.87), Rossman in the 50 freestyle (26.08) and 100 freestyle (57.36), and the 200 freestyle relay team of Andersen, Trinah Szafranski, Carly Waggoner and Edevold (1:50.79).

Also earning all-conference honorable mention honors by placing third for Park Rapids were Edevold in the 100 butterfly (1:10.65) and Maija Hovelsrud in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.38).

“The girls swam well. We had a lot of time drops and the girls never gave up and kept plugging away,” said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze. “We didn’t win the championship, but I thought we came out of it on the positive side.”

Detroit Lakes’ Emma Disse broke the conference record with 451.20 points in diving. The old record was 428.45 points by Detroit Lakes’ Kyley Foster last year.

The Panthers will now prepare for the Section 8A meet, which will be held Nov. 7-8 at Bemidji.

Team scores: Detroit Lakes 439, Park Rapids 410, Perham 280, Staples-Motley 192.
