Defense keys Lakers' win

Detroit Lakes' defense forced 21 turnovers and used a 13-0 run in the first half to break open a tie game en route to an 85-66 Mid-State Conference victory over the Park Rapids boys basketball team Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

Detroit Lakes' defense forced 21 turnovers and used a 13-0 run in the first half to break open a tie game en route to an 85-66 Mid-State Conference victory over the Park Rapids boys basketball team Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

After Detroit Lakes' Jackson Lyngaas opened the game by hitting a pair of 3-pointers, the Panthers used a basket off a rebound by Tyler McCollum, two inside baskets by Chris Goplerud, a 3-pointer by Jordan McCollum and a layup by Rilee Johnson to claim a 12-11 lead with 12:39 to play in the first half.

The Lakers responded to claim a 17-12 lead at the 11:03 mark before a layup by Johnson, a jumper by Kyle Goplerud and a 3-pointer by Chris Goplerud tied the game at 19-19 with 9:55 remaining in the first half.

Three layups by Ryan Cihak, two layups by Derek Long and a 3-pointer by Lyngaas sparked a 13-0 run as the Lakers led 32-19 with 7:19 remaining in the half. The Lakers would lead the rest of the game.

After a jumper by Kyle Goplerud, Long and Lyngaas hit 3-pointers as Detroit Lakes stretched its lead to 40-23 at the 4:53 mark.

A 3-pointer by Jordan McCollum and a layup by Zach Jewison helped the Panthers close the gap to 46-34 at the break.

Tyler McCollum opened the second half by hitting a 3-pointer as the Panthers trimmed the deficit to 46-37. Three-point plays by Long and Lyngaas and 3-pointers by Lyngaas and Nick Groth gave the Lakers a 66-46 lead with 11:45 to play.

A jumper by Wyatt Derman, a three-point play by Tyler McCollum, a basket off a rebound by Chris Goplerud, and 3-pointers by Tyler McCollum and Kyle Goplerud led the Panthers the rest of the way.

Long led the Lakers with 24 points while Lyngaas hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 points as Detroit Lakes improved to 6-2 in the conference and 9-9 overall.

Tyler McCollum's 20 points, Johnson's 12 points, and Chris Goplerud's 10 points and 11 rebounds led the Panthers, who fell to 1-8 in conference games and 6-13 overall. Jordan McCollum, Kyle Goplerud and Chris Goplerud had four assists each.
