Confident Panthers win pair at Pelican

Combining 19 walks with 29 hits helped the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team extend its winning streak with a doubleheader sweep at Pelican Rapids Thursday.

Combining 19 walks with 29 hits helped the Park Rapids fastpitch softball team extend its winning streak with a doubleheader sweep at Pelican Rapids Thursday.

The Panthers belted out 13 hits and drew 13 walks en route to a 21-3 six-inning victory in the first game. Park Rapids completed the sweep as 16 hits and six walks led to a 13-5 win in the second game.

In the opener, the Panthers scored 11 runs in the first inning and 10 runs in the sixth inning for the win.

Katie Just had an RBI single and two-run single while Alyssa Carlson had a pair of RBI singles in the 11-run first inning. Lauren Naeve also had an RBI single as the Panthers capitalized on six walks in that inning.

In the sixth, seven walks, a two-run single by Just and RBI singles by Ashley Domino and Olivia Vaadeland ended this game early via the 10-run rule.

Just went 4 for 5 with five RBI and Carlson went 2 for 2 with three runs to lead a balanced offensive attack. Vaadeland picked up the win, combining with Bailee Jerger on a three-hitter. The two pitchers each struck out five batters.

The Panthers completed the sweep by scoring five runs in both the first and third innings.

Singles by Anna Grimes, Jerger and Naeve, three walks, and two errors led to the Panthers' five runs in the first before RBI singles by Vaadeland, Just and Carlson and RBI doubles by Jerger and Domino produced the five runs in the third.

Park Rapids concluded the scoring in the sixth on RBI singles by Vaadeland and Jerger and an RBI double by Domino.

Jerger went 3 for 4 with three RBI, Domino went 3 for 5 and Vaadeland went 3 for 3 to lead the Panthers' offense. Jerger went the distance, allowing five hits while striking out seven as the Panthers improved to 11-4 on the season with their sixth straight win.
