Cass Lake defeats Tigers, gains share of conference lead

Both teams sit atop the Northland Conference boys basketball standings with 10-3 records with one game to go.

Cass Lake avenged a 58-54 loss to the Nevis boys basketball team on Jan. 23 with a 77-67 Northland Conference victory at Cass Lake on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Eddie Kramer led the Tigers with 25 points while Ty Warrington added 16 points and Luke DeWulf and Derek Lindow scored 9 points each. Jack McNamee and DeWulf had seven rebounds each, Warrington had five rebounds and joined Lindow with four assists, McNamee had three assists and three steals, and DeWulf and Warrington had two steals each.

Nevis, which trailed 40-35 at the half, fell to 10-3 in conference play as Cass Lake improved to 10-3 to share first place in the standings. The Tigers fell to 20-4 overall while Cass Lake improved to 18-6.

“Cass Lake was able to do to us at home what we did in our home contest. They got off to a great start and held on,” said Nevis head coach Scott Kramer, whose team must defeat Red Lake on the road in the regular-season finale on Friday (Feb. 28) to earn a share of the conference title. “I thought we played pretty well, but Cass Lake made a run in each half and even though we made our own run in the first half, we were not able to match their second-half run. We did some good things, but not consistently enough to beat a good team at their place.”
