Cass Lake-Bena uses strong second half to defeat Tigers

CL-B used a 17-2 run to spark a 62-50 Northwoods Conference victory over the Nevis girls basketball team.

Cass Lake-Bena used a 17-2 run at the start of the second half to spark a 62-50 Northwoods Conference win over the Nevis girls basketball team at Cass Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Three layups by Makenna Frazier and a three-point play by Ava Isaacson gave Nevis an early 11-5 lead before a 3-pointer by Isaacson and another layup by Frazier made it 17-9. Cass Lake rallied to claim an 18-17 lead before a layup by Addison Lindow, two jumpers and a basket off a rebound by Isaacson, and a pair of 3-pointers by Emily Funk gave the Tigers a 36-31 halftime edge.

Lindow opened the second with a jumper as Nevis led 38-31, but Cass Lake-Bena responded with a 17-2 run for a 48-40 advantage. Two layups by Frazier and a jumper by Isaacson cut the gap to 51-47, but Kailee Fineday responded with a 3-pointer as Cass Lake-Bena closed the game with an 11-3 run.

Isaacson finished with a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds while Frazier scored 16 points and had four steals. Lindow grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out four assists as the Tigers fell to 1-3 in the conference and 1-5 overall.

Fineday (17), Taryn Frazer (15), Amira LaDuke (13) and Krisalyn Seelye (12) led a balanced offensive attack for Cass Lake-Bena, which forced 35 turnovers to improve to 5-0 in the conference and 5-1 overall.

BEV tops Tigers

Zoe Hillmer sparked a 13-5 run to open the second half that led Browerville/Eagle Valley to a 60-45 victory over the Tigers in a game between Section 5A teams at Browerville on Dec. 14.

Hillmer hit a jumper and two 3-pointers that extended BEV’s 23-21 halftime lead to 36-26. A layup by Kia Heide, a jumper by Funk and two jumpers by Mya Stacey kept the Tigers within 43-36 before three layups by Alyah Abrahamson and two more baskets by HIllmer helped BEV seal the win.

A jumper by Heide, a layup off a steal by Frazier and a layup by Funk gave Nevis a 6-0 lead. BEV responded with a 17-5 run for a 17-11 advantage before a jumper by Funk, a basket off a rebound by Frazier, a layup by Stacey and a layup off a steal by Heide put Nevis in front 21-19 before BEV took charge.

Hillmer scored 25 points, Anna Myers added 14 points and Abrahamson finished with 13 points as BEV improved to 2-1 against section teams and 2-3 overall.

Frazier’s 11 points, three assists and three steals, Heide’s 10 points and five steals, and Isaacson’s 19 rebounds, three assists and three steals led the Tigers, who fell to 1-1 against section opponents.
