Carter, Schaap to enter Hall of Fame

     Two state track champions will be the newest members inducted into the Panther Athletic Hall of Fame.

     Paul Carter and Frank Schaap will be honored during the Park Rapids All Sports Banquet on May 20.

     Carter won the title in the mile run at the 1973 state Class A boys track and field meet by breaking the school record with a time of 4:30.20. Carter qualified for state as the Region 8 runner-up.

     Carter also competed at the state Class A track meet as a junior, placing 14th in the mile after qualifying as the region runner-up.

     In addition to two state appearances in track, Carter qualified for two state Class A cross-country meets, placing 97th in 1971 and 19th in 1972. Carter took third in the region in 1971 and second in the region in 1972 to advance to state.

     Schaap led the field in the 400-meter dash at the 1993 state Class A boys track and field meet with a 49.76. Schaap went undefeated in that race his senior season, setting the school record with a 49.57.

     In addition to winning the state title, Schaap finished fifth in the 200 dash in 1993. Schaap was the state runner-up in the 400 while placing fourth in the 200 and sixth in the 100 at the 1992 state meet. Schaap also qualified for state in the 400 in 1991, placing eighth.

     Schaap was the Mid-State Conference champion in the 100 in 1991, won conference titles in the 200 and 400 in 1992, and was the conference champion in the 200 and 400 in 1993. Schaap qualified for state as the Section 8A runner-up in the 400 in 1991, the section runner-up in all three sprints in 1992, and as the section champion in the 400 and section runner-up in the 200 in 1993.

     In addition to holding the school record in the 400, Schaap still holds school records in the 100 (11.0) and 200 (22.2).
