Patrick Deegan liked the chances of the Park Rapids boys track and field team to finish in the top five spots and advance to state in four events at Saturday's Section 8A meet at East Grand Forks.

The Panthers lived up to their coach's expectations.

Led by sophomore Austin Carlson's winning time in the 400-meter dash and runner-up finishes by Carlson in the 200 dash, freshman Isaac Overmyer in the 3,200 run and senior Forrest Drury in the pole vault, the Panthers qualified for the state Class A meet in four events and finished fourth in the team standings with 54.50 points.

"I thought we had a chance to get three kids to state. It's nice to see three Park Rapids kids get there," said Deegan. "Our goal was to finish in the top five. I'm definitely pleased with us taking fourth. I was really pleased with how the kids performed."

Carlson, who was the No. 1seed in the 400, lived up to that ranking by winning that race in a personal-best 51.22 to give the Panthers their first state qualifier. Carlson followed with a runner-up 23.74 in the 200 for his second state berth.

Nevis' Bryon Schuldt lived up to his top ranking by winning the 3,200 in 9:58.29 and Overmyer followed in a personal-best 10:00.06 as both qualified for state.

Drury completed the Panthers' list of state qualifiers by finishing second in the pole vault by clearing 13 feet.

Sending three individuals to state in four events is the best showing for the Panthers since qualifying five individuals in three events in 2002.

In addition to those four performances, the Panthers had eight other individuals score points.

The 4 x 800 relay team of Spencer Adolphson, Ben Baumgartner, Corey Joslyn and Ryan McBrady placed fourth with a season-best 8:54.34, Cole Tretbar placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 45-4.50, Brock Fritze took fifth in the 400 in 53.92, Brandon Ritter was sixth in the discus with a throw of 121-6, and Scott Wolff tied for sixth in the 300 hurdles in 44.88 and placed eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 39-6.50.

Carlson, Overmyer and Drury will look to place in their first trip to state, which begins Friday at Hamline University in St. Paul. Preliminaries in the 200 and 400 will be held Friday with the top nine advancing to Saturday's finals. The finals in the 3,200 and pole vault will be held Friday.

"Judging by their seeds, all three will have to improve again in order to medal," said Deegan. "All three are capable. Hopefully they'll all place."

Nevis' Schuldt, Feder advance

Nevis will send two individuals to state as Schuldt and Jordan Feder combined to qualify in the three events.

In addition to winning the 3,200, Schuldt capped off his final section meet by taking first in the 1,600 in 4:28.50 to return to state in both events while Feder capped off his sophomore season as the section runner-up in the high jump by clearing 6-2 to earn his first state berth.

Schuldt will run the 3,200 final on Friday and the 1,600 final on Saturday while Feder will compete in the high jump finals Saturday.

Those three finishes led the Tigers to seventh place with 41 points.

Also placing for Nevis were Matt Gustafson in the 800 run (fourth in 2:06.62), Feder in the 200 dash (fifth in 24.55) and long jump (eighth at 18-4.50), and the 4 x 200 relay team of Gustafson, Colin Huckbody, Reed Bennett and Feder (sixth in 1:39.57).

Roseau claimed the section title with 108 points. The top two finishers in each event qualified for the state Class A meet.
