Byer pitches Legion to win over Staples

Connor Byer threw a six-hit complete game in leading the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team to a 3-1 win over Staples-Motley last Wednesday night.

Connor Byer threw a six-hit complete game in leading the Park Rapids American Legion baseball team to a 3-1 win over Staples-Motley last Wednesday night.

Austin Jerger singled and scored on Sam Eystad's RBI single as Park Rapids tied the game at 1-1 in the first inning before Zach Hocking doubled and scored on Byer's RBI single in the second inning. Jason Haas was hit by a pitch and scored on Keith McDaniel's RBI double to conclude the scoring in the third.

Byer struck out eight over seven innings as Park Rapids picked up its first win of the season.

Wadena scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 9-6 win over Park Rapids Friday night.

After two errors gave Wadena a 1-0 lead in the first, Park Rapids took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of that inning on a single by Adam Thompson, a walk to Chase Brand, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly by Jordan McCollum.

Another error led to another unearned run in the third before five hits and an error led to four runs in the fifth as Wadena claimed a 6-2 advantage.

Park Rapids tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out double by Byer, walks to Thompson, Brand and McCollum, a wild pitch, a run-scoring grounder by Eystad, an error, a walk to Haas and Jack Herman's two-run single.

Wadena scored the winning runs in the seventh on a suicide-squeeze bunt and a two-run double.

Park Rapids finished with seven hits with McDaniel's single in the second, Thompson's double in the third, Haas' single in the fourth and McCollum's single in the seventh accounting for the other hits.

McCollum allowed 10 hits in a complete-game effort as Park Rapids fell to 1-5 on the season.

Park Rapids, which concludes the regular season at Bertha-Hewitt today (Wednesday), will host the Subdistrict tournament July 8, 11, 13 and 15 starting at 4 p.m. each day. Park Rapids will also host the District playoffs July 21-23.
