Braves top Frazee in marathon match

Menahga volleyball team prevails in battle of Section 6A teams

Tara Hendrickson’s 13 kills and Maryn Pinoniemi’s 21 digs led the way as the Menahga volleyball team prevailed in a marathon battle of Section 6A teams at Frazee on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Rena Pinoniemi added 10 kills and 14 digs while Annie Lake had 39 set assists and 13 digs in the Braves’ 25-18, 25-15, 16-25, 23-25, 15-10 victory.

Janie Tormanen and Jessica Pietila had seven kills each and Pietila served two aces as Menahga improved to 4-6 in section matches and 6-10 overall. The Braves offset 31 hitting errors with 46 kills while committing only five service errors.

McKenna O’Brien’s 10 kills, Ellie Reierson’s 10 kills, Paige Ziegler’s 25 digs, and Madison Starry’s nine kills and 20 digs led the Hornets, who fell to 6-4 against section opponents and 10-6 overall.

Wolves prevail

Megan Benjamin’s 17 kills and Brianna Raddatz’s 30 set assists and 13 digs led Walker-Hackensack-Akeley to a 3-1 win at Menahga on Monday, Sept. 30.

Allyson Sea (15) and Elizabeth Naugle (14) also had double digits in digs in the Wolves’ 23-25, 25-10, 25-19, 25-13 victory. W-H-A improved to 14-2 on the season.

Rena Pinoniemi, Tormanen and Elly Hillukka had seven kills apiece while Lake had 26 set assists and two aces serves to lead the Braves. Rena Pinoniemi (22) and Maryn Pinonieni (17) combined for 39 digs while Tormanen and Hendrickson had two solo blocks apiece.

NYM wins 3-0

Karli Kawlewski’s 12 kills and 16 digs sparked New York Mills to a Park Region Conference win over the Braves at Menahga on Sept. 26.

Tiffany Thompson’s eight kills, Brenna Thompson’s four ace serves and Brittany Johnson’s three ace serves aided the Eagles’ 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 victory.

Tormanen, Hillukka and Hendrickson had six kills each for Menahga. Lake set up 20 of the Braves’ 25 kills while Maryn Pinoniemi led the way with 12 digs. Rena Pinoniemi and Lake had seven digs each as the Braves fell to 0-4 in conference matches.

New York Mills improved to 4-0 in conference play and 13-4 overall.

The Braves went 2-3 at the Parkers Prairie tournament on Sept. 21 with a 2-0 loss to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (25-23, 25-18), a pair of 2-0 wins over Parkers Prairie (25-19, 25-17) and Northern Freeze (25-18, 25-22), and losses to Park Christian (21-25, 25-12, 15-8) and C-G-B (25-18, 25-16).
