Jonah Howard’s three-point play and free throws by Howard and Jared Tolkkinen in overtime gave the Menahga boys basketball team a 65-64 Park Region Conference win over Sebeka at Menahga on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Menahga led 60-57 before Kolby Kiser’s 3-pointer at the buzzer forced overtime. Howard was fouled after scoring off a rebound to give the Braves a 63-60 lead with 2:28 left in overtime before a free throw by Howard with 2:00 to play and a free throw by Tolkkinen with :08 remaining gave the Braves a 65-62 lead. Kiser’s tip-in at the buzzer concluded the scoring.

Two 3-pointers by Victor Aho, 3-pointers by Charlie Hodge and Tristan Aho, a jumper by Howard and a layup off a steal by Hodge helped Menahga tie the game at 16-16 with 8:52 to play in the first half. The Trojans claimed a 30-24 lead before a 3-pointer by Hodge made it 30-28 at the half.

Sebeka used an 11-0 run to build a 43-31 lead with 13:35 to play before the Braves rallied as two inside baskets by Howard, a putback by Hodge, two 3-pointers by Victor Aho, and a three-point play by Tristan Aho cut the gap to 47-46 with 7:12 left. After the Trojans took a 52-46 lead, consecutive 3-pointers by Devan Leritz, Wade Berttunen and Victor Aho gave Menahga a 55-52 lead with 3:42 to play. A layup by Berttunen and free throws by Howard, Berttunen and Andreas Aho gave the Braves a 60-57 lead with :09 remaining in regulation before Kiser’s 3-pointer from the top of the key forced overtime.

Victor Aho hit five 3-pointers and scored 15 points while adding four assists and three blocked shots to lead the Braves. Tristan Aho had 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Howard had a double-double of 11 points and 17 rebounds to go along with three steals. Hodge also scored in double figures with 10 points and had three steals while Berttunen grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists as the Braves overcame 23 turnovers by making 11 of 34 3-pointers.

Kiser tallied a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Mason Heino (13) and Dawson Bullock (10) also scored in double figures as the Trojans fell to 4-8 in conference games and 6-14 overall.

Menahga, which defeated the Trojans 70-50 on Jan. 11, improved to 7-4 in the conference and 10-11 overall. Henning tops the conference standings at 10-0 while Wadena-Deer Creek is 7-3. New York Mills shares third place with the Braves at 7-4.

B/EV tops Braves

Browerville/Eagle Valley used a 14-4 run to open the second half to spark a 71-64 win over the Braves at Browerville on Monday, Feb. 10.

A trio of 3-pointers by Tristan Aho, a three-point play and a jumper by Hodge, and a 3-pointer by Victor Aho gave Menahga a 24-22 lead before the Tigers carried a 33-32 lead into the break.

B/EV opened the second half by building a 47-36 lead and led 56-48 before Hodge scored off a rebound, Berttunen hit a 3-pointer, Hodge hit two 3-pointers and Andreas Aho hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 66-62 with 1:09 left. The Tigers sealed the win by making five free throws down the stretch.

Tristan Aho (18), Hodge (13) and Berttunen (12) scored in double figures for the Braves, who went 9 for 32 on 3-pointers. Howard (10), Berttunen (9) and Tristan Aho (8) combined for 27 rebounds with Andreas Aho’s three assists and Tristan Aho’s three blocked shots leading the way.

Dylan Uphus’ six 3-pointers and 25 points, Will Spychalla’s 20 points and Chris Vedbratten’s 12 points helped B/EV improve to 10-8.

Braves rout Pirates

The Braves jumped out to a 30-15 lead in coasting to an 84-51 conference win at Verndale on Feb. 7.

Two 3-pointers by Victor Aho and two baskets apiece by Hodge, Berttunen, Tristan Aho and Tolkkinen gave Menahga an early 15-point advantage. A 3-pointer by Berttunen helped give the Braves a 36-25 edge at the break.

Three-pointers by Hodge, Victor Aho and Berttunen, a basket off a rebound by Victor Aho, and a layup off a steal by Berttunen made it 56-36 before a 3-pointer by Victor Aho and two jumpers by Tristan Aho extended the lead to 65-42. Three-pointers by Hodge, Andreas Aho and Danny Noland helped seal the win.

Berttunen (18), Hodge (16), Victor Aho (16) and Tristan Aho (14) led a balanced scoring attack for the Braves, who also received eight rebounds from Howard. Victor Aho had six rebounds, Andreas Aho had five assists and Tristan Aho had four assists. The Braves, who made 10 of 25 3-pointers and 20 of 26 free throws in the game, defeated the Pirates 59-29 on Jan. 7.

Dilan Orlando (12) and Josh Johnson (11) scored in double figures for the Pirates, who fell to 1-8 in the conference and 2-17 overall.
