Borowicz propels Roseau past Panthers

The Rams' senior guard had 36 points and 10 assists in a 71-43 win over the Park Rapids girls basketball team.

Katie Borowicz once again showcased why Roseau leads all the Section 8AA girls basketball teams in scoring this season.

The senior guard scored 36 points, dished out 10 assists and had six steals as the Rams defeated Park Rapids 71-43 in a section game at Roseau on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

Borowicz matched the Panthers’ total in the first half as Roseau led 46-24 at the break. Borowicz hit two 3-pointers and scored 13 points as the Rams jumped out to a 23-9 lead. Rilee Michaelson opened the game with a jumper and Hannah Morgan scored on a layup and hit a 3-pointer for Park Rapids at the start. Two layups by Michaelson, a jumper by Morgan, and a 3-pointer and two jumpers by Tori Weaver were offset by 11 points by Borowicz and a jumper and a 3-pointer by Julia Braaten as the Rams built a 22-point lead at the intermission.

A layup and two 3-pointers by Borowicz and three baskets by Braaten sparked an 18-4 run to open the second half as Roseau extended the lead to 64-28 with 13:33 to play. A 3-pointer by Weaver, two inside baskets by Michaelson, a jumper by Olivia Davis and a basket off a rebound by Morgan made it 68-40 before a layup by Borowicz gave Roseau a 70-40 lead with 7:38 to play. A jumper by the Panthers’ Christina Engst with 1:18 remaining was the only field goal for either team the rest of the way.

Michaelson (12), Weaver (10) and Morgan (9) combined to score 31 points for the Panthers, who made only 3 of 17 3-point shots. Paige Johnson, Abby Morris and Engst had four rebounds each while Morgan had three assists.

Braaten finished with 16 points for the Rams, who shot 53% from the field (including making 8 of 13 3-pointers). Roseau, which is averaging 72.4 points a game to rank third among all Class AA teams, improved to 10-1 against section opponents and 18-5 overall. The Rams are currently seeded No. 2 in the North half of the section.

Park Rapids, which maintained the No. 4 spot in the North half of the section standings, fell to 5-7 in section games and 11-12 overall. Hawley (17-5) holds the top spot while Crookston (18-5) is currently No. 3 in the North half of the section.
