Bemidji gymnasts defeat Panthers in season debut

Erin Tooker earned runner-up honors in all-around as the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team opened the season with a 134.60-106.225 loss to Bemidji Friday night at the Area High School gym.

Erin Tooker earned runner-up honors in all-around as the Park Rapids-Nevis gymnastics team opened the season with a 134.60-106.225 loss to Bemidji Friday night at the Area High School gym.

Park Rapids received a 31.75 in vault behind a pair of 8.00s by Abby Kirlin and Shelby Leckner, a 7.90 by Randi Nielson and a 7.85 by Tooker. Tatum Offerdahl led the field with a 9.05 as Bemidji received a 34.95 in vault.

Tooker's 7.45, Kirlin's 7.35, Leckner's 6.80 and Nielson's 6.75 led the Panthers to a 28.35 in floor exercise. Lauren Lundquist took first with an 8.70 in leading Bemidji to a 33.90 team score.

Tooker's 7.55 and Kirlin's 7.35 led the Panthers to a 24.00 on balance beam. Alex Kirlin's 4.60 and Jasmine Cease's 4.50 rounded out Park Rapids' event score. Anna Corradi's 8.30 led Bemidji to a 31.20 in that event.

On uneven parallel bars, the Panthers received a 22.125 behind Tooker's 6.65, Katie Eischens' 5.725, Leckner's 5.45 and Cease's 4.30. Offerdahl led the field with an 8.95 as Bemidji received a 34.55 on bars.

Bemidji's Lauren Berg claimed the all-around title with a 31.85 while Tooker took second with a 29.50.

"I was very proud of the girls' performance. They have certainly gained skills during the offseason and we're already looking forward to the next meet," said Park Rapids head coach Rebecca Penning. "The next few weeks will provide time to practice confidence and a positive mentality during competitions. The leadership all of our upperclassmen have shown has been really meaningful and we're excited to see how it helps us reach our team goals."
