Defense carries Nevis girls in win over Laporte

Three players scored in double figures in leading the Nevis girls basketball team to a 67-23 Northwoods Conference victory over Laporte at the Tiger Arena on Jan. 30.

Kali Oelschlager led the Tigers with 15 points and seven rebounds while Katie Kamphaus had 14 points and six rebounds. Madison Neyens also hit double figures with 10 points for Nevis, which led 36-14 at the half.

Ava Isaacson (9), Kia Heide (8) and Ashley Pyburn (6) combined for 23 points with Pyburn tallying seven steals and five assists. Isaacson also had seven rebounds as Nevis improved to 4-7 in conference games and 6-11 overall.

Laporte suffered its 10th loss in a row in falling to 0-10 in the conference and 2-15 overall.

"We played extremely well. It was truly a team win," said Nevis head coach Bradley Neyens. "We took control early and never let off the gas pedal. We played well in all phases of the game. We shot well, we rebounded well and played great defense and only turned the ball over six times. We keep improving all the time and are having fun every night we step on the court."
