Four-run ninth propels Wolf Lake past Midway

A throwing error sparked a four-run ninth inning that propelled Wolf Lake to a 7-3 Lake and Pine League amateur baseball victory at Midway on Sunday, July 7.

With the game tied at 3-3, Matthew Skoog led off the top of the ninth inning with a walk. Max Knoll put down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error put runners on second and third. Derek Pihlaja followed with an RBI single before Al Pietila lined an RBI double. After a walk to Sam Meyer loaded the bases, Levi Schwartz lofted a sacrifice fly and Dylan Walsh lined an RBI single to give Wolf Lake the win.

The Wolf Pack also capitalized on errors to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Knoll and Pihlaja reached on errors, Pietila lofted a sacrifice fly and Schwartz lined an RBI single.

Midway used singles by Preston Riewer and Sam Beck to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the first before the Snurdbirds tied the game at 2-2 in the third on a single by Steve Wetterling, a double by Beck and a sacrifice fly by Alexander Jimenez.

Wolf Lake regained a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Pietila singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Schwartz. Midway countered in the eighth when Chris Baso walked, Wetterling singled and Beck was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Jimenez's fielder's choice plated the tying run, but Pietila was able to avoid any further damage by retiring the next two batters.

The throwing error in the ninth helped Wolf Lake secure the win.

Pietila went the distance for the win, allowing eight hits while striking out 13.

Wetterling (2 for 3), Beck (2 for 3) and Odland (2 for 4) led Midway's offense as Riewer (1 for 5 with a run) and Jimenez (1 for 3 with two RBI) accounted for the other hits.

Odland pitched the first seven innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Riewer took the loss in relief after giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits and four walks with two strikeouts over the final two innings.

Midway, which fell to 1-8 in league play and 1-10 overall, will host Perham Sunday (July 14) at 1:30 p.m.

Nimrod tops Midway

Nimrod scored eight unanswered runs to defeat Midway 10-3 in a Lake and Pine League game on July 6.

Midway scored twice in the third and once in the fourth for a 3-2 lead before the Gnats responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth in posting the win.

Baso accounted for all three of the Snurdbirds runs by going 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI. Odland went 1 for 4 with a run scored while Beck went 1 for 4 to round out Midway's four-hit attack.

Stetson Burkman started and took the loss, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Ike Kyllonen gave up one run on three hits and a walk over the final two innings.
