Staples built an 8-1 lead and held off a late rally for a 10-7 Lake and Pine League amateur baseball victory at Midway on Sunday (June 16).
The Lumberbats scored two runs in the first and second innings before a four-run sixth inning produced the 8-1 lead.
Midway, which scored a run in the first, made it 8-3 by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth before Staples made it 10-3 in the seventh. The Snurdbirds concluded the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the seventh and one run in the ninth.
The Snurdbirds finished with 13 hits with Preston Riewer (3 for 5, one run), Chris Baso (3 for 4, two runs), Steve Wetterling (2 for 5, two runs, one RBI) and Cory Odland (2 for 4, one RBI) leading the way. Ike Kyllonen (1 for 2, one run, one RBI), Alexander Jimenez (1 for 3, two RBI) and Sam Champa (1 for 3, one run, one RBI) also contributed offensively. Wetterling had two doubles while Baso and Jimenez had a double each.
Stetson Burkman started and took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Pete Marjamaa gave up six runs on six hits with one strikeout over the next two innings while Odland allowed one hit with three strikeouts over the final two innings as Midway fell to 1-5 on the season.
The Snurdbirds host Wadena-Deer Creek on Sunday (June 23) at 1:30 p.m.
Esox go 1-2
The Park Rapids Esox went 1-2 against three teams from Manitoba at the Jim Karn Memorial Tournament at Crookston on June 15-16.
On June 15, the Esox split games by following an 8-4 loss to the Cartwright Twins with a 7-2 victory over the Bonivital Brewers. Park Rapids ended the tournament with an 8-7 loss to the Pilot Mound Mounds on June 16 to finish in fifth place in this seven-team tournament.
The Marble Mallards defeated Tolna (North Dakota) 7-2 in the championship game while Cartwright finished third following a 13-0 loss to Marble. Pilot Mound finished fourth while the Crookston Reds defeated Bonivital 11-1 for sixth place.
The Esox will resume Lake and Pine League play with a game at Nimrod on Sunday (June 23) at 1:30 p.m. Park Rapids carries a 3-1 Lake and Pine League record and 4-3 overall record into that game.
