The Park Rapids Esox amateur baseball team improved to 2-1 in Lake and Pine League action with a 15-4 seven-inning win over Midway at Park Rapids on June 1.

The Esox took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Riley Massie, Zach Hocking and Clayton Gallus and two errors before taking control with a 10-run second inning.

A bunt single by Massie, an RBI double by Jack Naugle, an RBI single by Hocking, an RBI double by Dave Mortensen, an RBI single by Gallus, a two-run single by Massie, an RBI single by Naugle and a two-run double by TJ Erickson pushed Park Rapids' lead to 13-0.

Singles by Mortensen, Cody Schirmers and Gallus extended the Esox's lead to 15-0 in the fifth.

Midway concluded the scoring with two runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh. Sam Champa drove in Chris Baso and Steve Wetterling in the sixth while Pete Marjamaa had an RBI double in the seventh as Preston Riewer and Wetterling scored.

Midway had six hits with Riewer, Wetterling, Pete Marjamaa, Sam Beck, Champa and Cory Odland each contributing a hit.

Gallus picked up the win for Park Rapids while Alexander Jimenez took the loss. Jimenez allowed 13 runs (five earned) in two innings before Marjamaa (two unearned runs in three innings) and Odland (one scoreless inning) finished up.

Midway fell to 0-4 on the season following a 15-10 loss to Nimrod at Midway on June 2.

Nimrod led 8-1 before Midway tied the game by scoring three times in the fourth and four times in the fifth. Nimrod followed with a seven-run seventh inning to claim the win.

The Snurdbirds had 13 hits with Riewer (2 for 4 with a triple, three runs, four RBI), Beck (2 for 5, one run, one RBI), Jimenez (2 for 4, one run, one RBI), Champa (1 for 4, one run), Ray Mueller (2 for 4, one run, one RBI), CJ Maki (2 for 5, one run) and Ike Kyllonen (1 for 5, one run) leading the way. Baso scored the other run while Stetson Burkman took the loss after giving up 15 runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in six innings. Riewer finished up with three scoreless innings.

Wolf Lake wins

Sam Pikula pitched Wolf Lake to a 3-1 win over Midway in a Lake and Pine League game at Wolf Lake on May 26.

Wolf Lake took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Derek Pihlaja scored on Sam Meyer's RBI grounder.

The Wolf Pack made it 3-0 in the third when Al Pietila walked, stole second and scored on Levi Schwartz's RBI single. Schwartz later scored on an error.

Odland started and took the loss for Midway.

Midway opened the season with a 14-4 loss to Staples on May 12.

The Snurdbirds finished with seven hits with Riewer going 3 for 4 with two runs scored to lead the way. Odland (1 for 5, one run), Baso (1 for 2), Maki (1-4, one run) and Kyllonen (1 for 3) had the other hits while Mueller and Jimenez each drove in a run. Burkman took the loss.

Park Rapids lost to Sebeka 5-2 on May 12 as Austin Becker and Kevin Kuhn scored on Naugle's two-run single in the ninth to avoid being shut out. Massie (1 for 5), Hocking (1 for 4), Erickson (1 for 4), Austin Becker (1 for 4), Schirmers (1 for 3), Mortensen (1 for 4) and Naugle (2 for 2) combined for the eight hits for the Esox.

Gallus took the loss, allowing five runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts over four innings. Erickson allowed two hits over the final four frames.
