New York Mills rallies to top Braves in debut
New York Mills rallied from an early 6-1 deficit for a 12-8 Park Region Conference victory over the Menahga baseball team in the season opener at New York Mills on Tuesday, April 9.
After New York Mills took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Braves responded by scoring six times in the second. A lead-off walk to Thomas Litzau, an RBI single by Ivan Anderson, a walk to Charlie Hodge, an RBI single by Brock Kako, a two-run double by Lars Keranen, an RBI single by Nolan Haataja, a single by Eddie Salmen and an RBI single by Corey Haataja sparked that inning.
Salmen singled and scored on a passed ball to give Menahga a 7-3 lead in the fifth before New York Mills took a 9-7 lead by scoring six times in the bottom of that inning.
Jack Pietila was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Nolan Haataja as the Braves trailed 9-8 in the sixth before New York Mills sealed the win by concluding the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Menahga finished with nine hits with Haataja and Salmen both going 2 for 4 and Pietila scoring twice. Keranen and Haataja had two RBI each. Keranen started and took the loss, allowing nine runs on seven hits and four walks over the first 4 ⅔ innings. Salmen gave up three runs on four hits and a walk over the final 1 ⅓ innings.
Drey Roberts (2 for 4), Brady Bauch (2 for 4, two RBI) and Derick Wegscheid (2 for 4, two RBI) led an 11-hit offensive attack for the Eagles.
