Thompson, Tigers eliminate Braves from section playoffs

Adam Thompson threw a one-hitter and was supported with home runs by Jack DeWulf and Shep Davis as the Nevis baseball team eliminated Menahga from the Section 5A tournament with a 10-0 opening-round win in six innings Thursday at Nevis.

Nevis scored two unearned runs in the first inning, scored twice in the third, added a run in the fourth, scored four times in the fifth and ended this game early via the 10-run rule with the final run in the sixth.

DeWulf led Nevis' nine-hit attack by going 2 for 3 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI while Dan Mistic went 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Dillon McGee went 1 for 3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI while Davis scored twice and drove in a pair. Wyatt Rech (1 for 2 with an RBI), Jack Landquist (1 for 3) and Tucker Roehl (1 for 2 with an RBI) also contributed hits. Sam Hitchcock scored a run and drove in a run and Ben Soldwisch scored a run.

Thompson walked four and struck out six in a complete-game effort as Nevis, the No. 1 seed in the West, improved to 16-2.

Jack Pietila had the only hit for the Braves, the No. 8 seed in the West that ended the season with an 0-18 record. Lars Keranen started and gave up eight hits and nine runs (four earned) with one walk and five strikeouts over four innings. Ivan Anderson walked two batters he faced before Pietila finished up, allowing one run on two hits in 1 ⅓ innings. Four Menahga errors led to five unearned runs.

Nevis hosted Pine River-Backus on May 29 with both teams advancing to the next round May 30 at Deer Creek. The section tournament continues at Pierz on June 4 and concludes on June 7.
