Area wrestlers compete at Big Bear Tournament

UNC's Ethan Hendrickson, WHAN's Dawson McGee were among four locals who placed at annual 41-team meet.

United North Central’s Ethan Hendrickson and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis’ Dawson McGee were among four local wrestlers who placed at the 41-team Big Bear Tournament at Cass Lake on Dec. 20-21.

Hendrickson advanced to the semifinals in the 113-pound bracket before having to forfeit his last two matches because of injury to place sixth. Hendrickson pinned Crosby-Ironton’s William Erickson in 21 seconds, posted an 8-0 major decision over MAHACA’s Caden Rose and won by medical forfeit over Big Lake’s Dante Visci before being pinned by Big Lake’s Christian Noble in 5:50 in the semifinals. Noble was rated No. 2 at 113 pounds in the latest state Class AA poll. Hendrickson, who was rated No. 1 at 106 pounds in the latest state Class A poll, lost by injury default to Crookston’s Ethan Bowman after 47 seconds before forfeiting his last match to Hutchinson’s Grant Pierce in the fifth-place match.

McGee placed eighth at 106. After dropping a 20-4 technical fall decision to Big Lake’s Nolan Reiter, McGee rebounded to post a 9-0 major decision over Minnewaska Area’s Nick Ankeny, a 7-4 decision over Mora’s Anthony Nelson, a 5-2 decision over United North Central’s Aaron Lake and a 2-0 decision over Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie’s David Revering. McGee ended the tournament by being pinned by Reiter in 1:53 and losing by a 17-1 technical fall to Fertile-Beltrami’s Daunte Yost.

UNC had two other wrestlers place as Eion Ness finished fifth at 152 and Torrey Carlson placed eighth at 195. Ness, who was rated No. 10 at 152 in the latest state Class A poll, pinned Mahnomen-Waubun’s Dustin Rock in 3:40 and Hutchinson’s Riley Gill in 4:32 before posting a 6-2 decision over Minnewaska Area’s Mason Blair in the quarterfinals. After an 18-6 loss to Thief River Falls’ Jake Davis in the semifinals, Ness was pinned by Aitkin’s Tyler Spolarich in 2:45 before defeating Blair 4-2 in the fifth-place match.

Carlson rebounded from a 7-2 loss to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville’s Hans Holmquist by pinning Crosby-Ironton’s Hayden McGowan in 1:46, defeating Albany’s Will Blattner 3-2, edging Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus’ Corbin Knapp 1-0 and defeating Park Rapids’ Joe Stachowski 3-1. Carlson closed the tournament with a 6-3 loss to Holmquist and a 3-1 overtime loss to Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton’s Preston Johnson.

Also wrestling for the Warriors were Spencer Erickson (0-2 at 120), Hunter Skaro (1-2 at 126), Dylan Rasmussen (3-2 at 132), Hank Tellers (2-2 at 138), Gabe Hendrickson (0-2 at 145), Dakota Meech (2-2 at 160), Vince Dailey (2-2 at 170) and Logan Torma (0-2 at 182). Rasmussen, Tellers and Dailey pinned two opponents each while Skaro recorded one pin.

None of Park Rapids’ eight wrestlers ended up placing.

Robby Sherk went 1-2 at 106, Lucas Kritzeck went 0-2 at 132, Joe Klein went 2-2 at 152, Kaden Safratowich went 2-2 at 160, Harley Wellman went 1-2 at 170, Tristan Hill went 0-2 at 182, Stachowski went 2-2 at 195 and Hunter Carnell went 2-2 at 220. Safratowich, Stachowski and Carnell recorded two pins each while Klein pinned one opponent.

Also wrestling for WHAN were Callen Whitney (0-2 at 120), Devin Johnson (0-2 at 132), Alex Hein (0-2 at 138) and Ficher Smith (0-2 at 195).

UNC finished 20th with 66 points while Park Rapids was 34th with 31 points and WHAN placed 41st with 6 points. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville, which was rated No. 1 in the state Class A poll, topped the field with 216 points while Minnewaska Area (which was rated No. 3 in Class A) followed with 163.50 points and Detroit Lakes (which was rated No. 8 in the Class AA poll) was third with 154.50 points.
