The Park Rapids Esox split a pair of Lake and Pine League amateur baseball games last weekend.

Midway belted out five home runs to defeat the Esox 14-4 on Saturday, May 29. Park Rapids rebounded with an 18-hit attack that sparked a 14-6 win at Staples on Sunday, May 30.

Midway used solo home runs by Zach Etter in the first inning and Preston Riewer in the third to take a 2-0 lead before taking control with a five-run fourth. Two walks and a single by Levi Schwartz set up a grand-slam homer by Sam Beck. Ray Muller followed with a single and scored on John Dormanen’s RBI single as the Snurdbirds led 7-0. Midway added another run in the fifth for an 8-0 advantage.

The Esox scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a single by Jason Haas and a double by Clayton Gallus. Midway countered in the seventh when a double by Etter and a single by Beck produced three runs.

Singles by Zach Hocking and Haas and a double by Kevin Murphy capped off Park Rapids’ scoring in the eighth while a single by Etter and homers by Beck and Dormanen capped off the scoring for Midway in the ninth.

Etter (3 for 3), Beck (3 for 4) and Dormanen (3 for 4) led a 13-hit attack for Midway, which improved to 6-0 on the season after an 8-3 win over Wolf Lake on Sunday, May 30.

Haas went 2 for 3 for the Esox, who finished with seven hits. Ty Karger started and took the loss.

Park Rapids scored once in the first, five times in the third, three times in the fourth, twice in both the fifth and sixth, and once in the eighth to defeat Staples for the second time this season.

After Gallus’ sacrifice fly produced the first run of the game, Staples took a 2-1 lead in the second. Singles by Karger, Ethan Eischens, TJ Erickson, Hocking and Haas put the Esox in front for good in the fourth.

Singles by Karger, Eischens and Nick Jasmer made it 9-2 in the fourth while Gallus singled and scored on Karger’s home run in the fifth. A double by Eischens and a single by Hocking pushed the lead to 13-2 in the sixth. Staples scored four times in the bottom of the sixth before three walks and a single by Haas concluded the scoring.

Eischens (4 for 7), Karger (3 for 6), Hocking (2 for 4), Jasmer (2 for 5), Haas (2 for 3) and Matt Johanning (2 for 5) led Park Rapids’ offense. Gallus earned the win as the Esox improved to 2-3 on the season.

Park Rapids travels to New York Mills for a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, June 5.
